Girls Varsity Track - Division Champs

Lauren Williams coming through the 100m hurdles.
In a hotly contested division title race, the girl's varsity track team brought home a division championship a week ago Tuesday. Competing against rivals Hewlett and South Side, the girls dominated many of the running events to take the crown by a margin of 19 points. The girls had to overcome a tough 24 point advantage that Hewlett posted because of the pole vault (GC doesn't have the facilities for a pole vault jump to practice). But like the champions they are, the girls battled each and every race or field event to garner the points that were needed to bring home the gold.

Scoring points in the events noted earned the following girls All Division honors - Emily Hepworth (100 and 200 sprints), Maddie Adams (800, 1500 and 4x800), Michelle Rotondo (400 hurdles, 800, and 4x800), Liz Slattery (1500, 3000 and 4x800), Lauren Williams (400 hurdles, 100 hurdles, triple jump), Laura Martens (400 hurdles, 400m, 4x400), Abby Hepworth (high jump), Barbara Sullivan (high jump), Brooke Senken (1500 and 800), Amanda Joyce (shot put and discus), Katie Reilly (100 and 4x400), Katy Daly (400 and 4x400), Taryn Schmelzinger (400m and 4x400), Molly Galvin (3000), Caroline Betts (3000) and Jenna D'Angelo (4x800).

The girls competed in the Nassau County Class AA Championships this past Tuesday and Wednesday at Mitchell Field and move on to the State Qualifying meet next Tuesday and Wednesday. Keep up the strong finishes girls, you're doing awesome!
