GCAA Baseball Pacific League Weekly Highlights Giants- The Giants continue to improve led by the pitching of Jake Milbury and the defense of Steven Slovensky and Joey Derrico's web gem at second base. Cubs - The Cubs offense was impressive this week with key hits by Christian Coppola and Jack Mahland. The catching debut for Joseph King showed real talent. Mets- Dan Valenti behind the plate backed-up a strong pitching effort by Shayne Gallagher. Tony Loiodici turned a second double play and Stephen Moran made a great catch of a towering pop-up at third. Pirates- The Pirates again played some excellent baseball. Christopher Ciurcina and Dominick Avitabile had excellent all around games and Brandon Brugnone provided a big bat this past week. Devil Rays- The Devil Rays continue to improve each week. Brian McKenna proved clutch belting a single in the last at bat of the game with two outs, bases loaded. Brian picked up multiple hits during the week. Zach Warhurst continues to get on base and score runs for the Rays. White Sox- On Saturday the White Sox had a very tough opponent in the Cardinals but none the less we fought on with strong defense led by Michael Patalano, Finn Gibbons, Robert Ricigliani and Kyle Hand. Kyle made a particular great play with a diving catch on a pop fly. Blue Jays- Cole Sonner's excellent pitching and Brendan Coor's great fielding plays lead the Jay's defense while Owen Prendergast's clutch RBIs and Robert Hyer's timely hitting lead the offense. Royals- The Royals continued their strong play this week, led by the terrific fielding of Jack Roscoe. Timely hitting was provided by James Walzcyk and John Cote. Kiernan Gunn continued to pitch out of tough situations. Yankees- The Yankees played the strong hitting Pirates and Mariners this week. Joe Phillipas continued his torrid hitting against both teams. Peter McCarthy and Kevin McDougal added to the hit parade and wielded some hot leather in the field. Patrick Carman showed his versatility in the field, at bat and on the mound. A's- Faced with a daunting Thursday-Saturday schedule, the A's stepped up their play. Thursday featured the unsung battery of Matthew Varano-to-Kieran O'Sullivan with Aidan Ryan providing late-inning relief and timely hitting. An aggressive woodpecker high behind the bench held the lads' interest, as well. Saturday's team numbered five players, all of whom buckled down and contributed. Zach Mezzo, Ryan, and Brendan Burke painted the corners and the bat of Jack Wozniak came alive. O'Sullivan played a gold-glove second base. Mariners- the Mariners continued their torrid pace with strong performances by Christian Irwin, TJ Michielini and Jay Iraj as they continued to pound the ball with 3 hits each . Strong pitching followed as Liam McAndrews and Mike DeSanti closed the door on its opponents.
