Rose Sorace Lamberti
Rose Sorace Lamberti

Rose Lamberti, a Garden City resident for 43 years, died peacefully in her home on Thursday, May 10th. She would have celebrated her 104th birthday on May 21st. She was able to live independently until her last years when she required home-care.

Rose was born in 1903 in Polistena, Reggio Calabria, Italy. She came to America in 1906 with her mother, Maria Conchetta Megna, her five-year-old brother, Frank and her two-year-old sister, Emily. Upon their arrival in New York City they were met by her father, Michaelangelo Sorace, who had arrived in America first. By 1917 Rose had six more brothers and sisters. Her father worked as a tailor for the John Wanamaker Company.

In 1920 Rose lost her mother in the Spanish Influenza epidemic. Rose, who was 16 years of age, was determined to keep her family together despite others' well-intentioned advice to send the younger children to live with various relatives. Ultimately, the family stayed together and prospered under Rose's commitment and hard work. She worked long hours in a factory as a dressmaker. In 1928 Rose married Thomas Lamberti. They had one child, Thomas M. Lamberti.

Rose and her husband built a home in Garden City in 1964. She was an active member of St. Anne's parish. Always proud of her Italian heritage, she founded the Ladies' Italian-American Society of Garden City. From 1958 to 1959 Rose served as president of the American Committee on Italian Migration (ACIM.) On July 2, 1968 Rose led a delegation from ACIM to meet with President Lyndon B. Johnson at the White House.

Rose is survived by her son, Thomas, who is a Village Trustee, his wife Eileen and grandson, Tom. There was a Mass of Christian Burial at St. Anne's Church in Garden City on May 15th.
