Remember Our Fallen Vets

Garden City will remember its fallen vets at traditional Memorial Day services on Monday, May 28th.

Church services will be held at 9 a.m. at the Cathedral of the Incarnation.

The parade will be held at 10 a.m., starting at Stewart and Cherry Valley Avenues. It will proceed north on Cherry Valley Avenue to Tenth Street, east on Tenth to Franklin Avenue, south on Franklin to Seventh Street, west on Seventh Street.

A reviewing stand will be located just west of the Library, Official ceremonies will follow at the Middle School.

Memorial Day is one of those holidays which is in danger of losing its meaning. When it was first instituted, it was a time of solemn remembrance, in which entire towns would turn out to pay respects to the war dead.

Now, many people consider it just the beginning of summer, when the beaches open and the weather turns lovely.

Isn't it worth just a couple of hours over this long weekend to keep the meaning in Memorial Day?
