Daredevils (GU12) Tie Stony Brook in Division Game

On May 12, the Daredevils faced Stony Brook Lightning, the undefeated first place team in their division. They were poised to take them on and played with determination from the first whistle. A header off a well-placed corner kick gave Stony Brook the lead. Kelsey Tierney's half field boots from goal gave forwards Krista Dampman, Nicole Bommarito, Jane Frumberg and Carly Knowles several head starts towards their net. After many exciting "hitting the post" shots, Carly nailed an impressive goal to tie it up.

Erin Greiner played outstanding throughout the game at center halfback. Controlling the midfield, she - along with Jackie Jahelka, Lily Schmitt, Liesl Jaye and Courtney Studdert, continued to win the ball and keep it a balanced match. Stony Brook had a fast and skilled offensive line. Niki Berkery was exceptional at center fullback and had several smart runs up the field. Lauren Coleman's speed and "strength of play" were demonstrated throughout the game. Along with "speedy devils" Bitty Furman and Taylor Pappas, the defensive line was very successful transitioning plays back to the Daredevils offense. Captain Brynn Murphy provided leadership and direction to the team throughout the game.

After a bizarre play in the box by Stony Brook in which a fullback (yes, fullback) picked up the ball in front of the net to prevent a goal (no, a red card was not produced), the Daredevils took their final shot on goal with three seconds left in the game. The game ended in a tie after playing a terrific game against great competition.

The Daredevils will verse Lindenhurst on May 19th at the Garden City Pool at 12:30pm. We invite you to bring your "up and coming" soccer players to cheer them on and meet the team. Go Daredevils!
