Sharks East Coast Sweep Stopped In New England

Shane Thornton breezes by defenders
The Shark attack this spring has extended as far south as Cockeysville Maryland and heads north into New England with a match against Duxbury, Mass this weekend. Despite racking up victories along the Eastern Coastline States, the Sharks lost their last bid to roll into and claim all of New England when they were stopped by the Greenwich 8A Youth Team on Saturday. Every game between these two teams has been a nail-biter decided in the closing minutes. This game was no exception.

The Sharks were down at halftime, 3-2, (goals by Brian Coleman from Devin Dwyer). In the third quarter, Greenwich added another goal and the status quo continued until Sean Mahon ripped an unassisted shot into the goal at the horn to narrow the deficit to a goal. In the 4th quarter, Tom Gordon tied the score with 5 minutes remaining on an assist from Dwyer. In the meantime, Shark's defenders Stephen Jahelka, Brian Fischer, Brian Porter, Tom Adams, executed almost flawlessly the Shark of shutting down Greenwich strong hand shots, but somehow Greenwich managed to come up with the game winner with about a minute left to play and chalked up an extra goal in the final seconds of play. This rivalry has resulted in some outstanding lax and defensive gems.

Early Sunday morning, the Sharks faced off against Ridgewood, a team that had beaten Greenwich. Coach "Doc" Dougherty reminded the Sharks that great teams are distinguished not the lack of losses, but the ability to avoid back to back losses. The Sharks responded-and rebounded from the loss to defeat Ridgewood, 7-4.

The game against Ridgewood was a battle at the outset. Ridgewood scored a couple of quick goals and retreated into a zone defense that allowed them to hold a halftime lead. In the second half, the Sharks were realigned into an offense that cut the seams of the Ridgewood zone. They made some tactical changes in the shot placement and were able to score some goals and take the lead for the first time in the game. In the meantime, Goalies John Bock & Dan Marino and Shark defenders Brian Fischer, Brian Porter and JP Burnside, with Eugene Berkery and Andre Stone stepped it up a notch to overcome the absence of Stephen "The Beast" Jahelka. Their second half effort allowed the Sharks to score on goals by Devin Dwyer, Matt Clarkson, Tom Gordon(2), Sean Mahon, Matt Confort & Liam Kennedy on assists from each other and Pat Berkery, Brian Coleman and Shane Thornton. Rob Savage played without fear, getting ground balls and brushing off crushing body checks. Charlie Garcia, Brendan Cullen, Kyle Irwin, Mike Lofrese and John Fallon also each contributed to the Sharks come from behind victory.

The Sharks hope to stake a claim in Massachussets when they face a travel team from Duxbury on Saturday, May 13th @ 2PM at CW Post. They then play Cold Spring Harbor on Sunday @12PM at USMMA.
