Schools Before Fields To the Editor:
Several residents and teachers have share my concern that our town's schools are still in need of updating and maybe rebuilding, yet it appears our administrators decided it was more practical to spend precious capital on leveling a field. A new school could have been built in that space and the field could have been put where the old school stood. I suggest we start a Garden City School Fund, with the focus of the returns being to update and potentially rebuild our town's schools. This would give affluent Garden City residents (and alum) a way to contribute to something that will keep us focused on what's important: our kids. Ron Tadross Outstanding Performance To the Editor: Last weekend, the Garden City Dance Project performed their 13th show, this year at SUNY Old Westbury's Maguire Theatre. The show was an eclectic mix of ballet, pointe, modern, jazz and a bit of theatrical fun! Despite a new venue, the dancers did an outstanding job performing for a full house of dedicated GC family and friends. The forty dancers and their families would like to thank those of you who ventured to Old Westbury and showed support for this uniquely wonderful program. Best wishes to our departing seniors - Jackie Bishop, Briana Ciccone, Courtney Hunt, Ashley Muraca and Liana O'Brien -- as they embark on a new journey. Many thanks to our brilliant instructors and choreographers. Lastly, we thank Jean Philippou for her unrelenting dedication and her artistic vision. There were several alumni dancers present and many of them commented that with each show they leave thinking it was the best so far and are amazed at how Jean manages to consistently exceed the prior year. The wheels of creativity are already spinning for next spring! Audition for the performing ensemble and registration for the conservatory program is June 2. The Garden City Dance Project Families A New St. Paul's To The Editor: Those of us who wish to save St. Paul's historic building should consider alternate ideas to those being evaluated by the Trustees committee. The following is my idea and I encourage others to share their ideas in this column. 1. Construct a new green building saving only the front historic edifice of St. Paul's. 2. Include community meeting rooms, recreation areas for senior and youth groups and a swimming pool. 3. Move an enlarged village hall including police, fire, water departments and other offices into the new building. 4. Move the school board administration offices into the new building. 5. Make the new building the Community Center of the village for the 21st century. This will cost additional taxes and bonding but the existing buildings are old and inadequate and need to be replaced in the near future so why not do it now and keep St. Paul's as a cherished memory. Morton Yuter Senior Parking Needed To The Editor: Several years ago when Senior Citizens went to vote on the school budget they were welcomed by a person, who permitted them to park in a no parking zone, (there are never any open parking spaces) go inside to vote, and return to their car without inconvenience. For the past several years, under Mr. Monaghan's regime, this is no longer the case. It is strongly recommended that in future years the students be required to keep their cars at home on voting day or in the alternative to reserve parking spaces for Senior Citizens who come to vote. We noted that some cars were being ticketed on the street outside the parking lot. If you received such a ticket and are a Senior Citizen, please write a letter to Garden City News and let us know. Joseph A. Calamari PS - It looks like courtesy for Senior Citizens is a thing of the past. Or do they prefer that you do not vote while eighteen (18) year olds, who own no property, do. PPS - I saw no advertisements for courtesy cabs this year. PPS - Ladies! Does this letter satisfy your request?
