Sleep Disorders Center Achieves Reaccredidation

The Sleep Disorders Center (SDC) at Winthrop-University Hospital has received prestigious reaccreditation from the American Academy of Sleep Medicine (AASM). This notable achievement, considered the "gold standard" by the AASM, marks the fourth time that the SDC has been granted accreditation by the Academy.

In order to receive AASM accreditation, the SDC had to exceed all standards for professional, quality healthcare as designated by the Academy.

"We are honored to once again receive reaccreditation by the American Academy of Sleep Medicine," said Dr. Michael Weinstein, Director of Winthrop's Sleep Disorders Center and Diplomate of the American Board of Sleep Medicine. "The Center consistently meets the Academy's distinguished standards, which exemplifies our commitment to maintaining the highest standards of care in all areas of the facility."

Dr. Weinstein was recently recognized by the AASM for his expertise in sleep medicine when the organization appointed him to serve on the Task Force on Clinical Guidelines for the Evaluation and Management of Adult Obstructive Sleep Apnea, a national AASM committee. The committee is responsible for developing national guidelines for the evaluation and management of patients with obstructive sleep apnea (OSA).

OSA affects approximately 15 to 20 million Americans, and a majority of individuals suffering from it remain undiagnosed and untreated. Winthrop's Sleep Center offers a multidisciplinary approach to diagnosing and treating OSA and other wide-spread sleep disorders including insomnia, snoring and narcolepsy.

Established in 1986, the Sleep Disorders Center at Winthrop-University Hospital is staffed by sleep medicine specialists and sleep technologists. The Center provides comprehensive, individual evaluation and state-of-the-art testing for the diagnosis and treatment of clinical disorders related to sleep.
