Lunch Bag Book Talk

The Garden City Public Library's Lunch Bag Book Talk will be held on Thursday June 14th 12:00-2:00.

The Camel Bookmobile will be the book of choice for the final Lunch Bag Book Talk of the Spring. It will take place on Thursday, June 14th 12:00 to 2:00PM. Evocative, seamless, and haunting, The Camel Bookmobile is a powerful saga that challenges our fears of the unknown. It is a story that captures the riddles and calamities that often occur when two cultures collide. It follows an American librarian who travels to Africa to give meaning to her life, and ultimately loses a piece of her heart. In the end, this compelling novel shows how one life can change many, in spite of dangerous and seemingly immutable obstacles. Registration begins Tuesday, May 22nd . Registration is limited to Garden City residents and must be done in person. For further information please contact Laura Flanagan at The Garden City Public Library 742-8405.

News From The Children's Room

In preparation for our summer reading club, next week we will begin our countdown of the 20 reasons why you should sign your child up for the summer reading club. Look for the first five reasons next week! Registration for the summer reading club will begin on June 18. Flyers with all the information about our summer programs will be available in the Children's Room soon. Here are the first five:

1. Reading sharpens minds.

2. The program is open to all children regardless of their reading level.

3. Reading as few as 4 to 5 books over the summer can keep elementary school students' skills from slipping.

4. It keeps minds stimulated over the summer.

5. Summer Reading Clubs are fun for children who are reluctant readers.

Look for five more reasons next week. Registration for the Summer Reading Club begins on June 18. Flyers with information on all of our summer programs will be available in the Children's Room soon!

The Children's Department is always expanding our collection of Books on CD. Some new titles include: "Brian's Winter", "Tales from the House of Bunnicula", "The Tail of Emily Windsnap", "Counting on Grace", "Chocolate Fever" and "The Great Brain". We have also expanded our collection of books in Large Print. Some of those new titles include: "A Wrinkle in Time", "Because of Winn-Dixie", "The Homework Machine", and sports fiction books by Matt Christopher. Studies have shown that large print gives struggling readers reading confidence, improved letter and word recognition, improvement in reading comprehension and increased reading enjoyment.

May is: National Bike Month, Physical Fitness and Sports Month, and most important, Get Caught Reading Month. So walk or ride your bike over to the Garden City Public Library and check out some books, so you can get caught reading!

Memorial Day is on May 28. Do you know the original name of the holiday? If not, stop by the Children's Room and use some of our resources to find out.

Please check the library website www.gardencitypl.org for upcoming events and registration dates. Funding for these programs has been provided by the Friends of the Garden City Public Library. Priority for registration and participation is given to children who are Garden City Public Library cardholders.
