GC's Auditor Elected To Top State Finance Officials Post
Veteran Garden City Auditor James Olivo has been elected as one of only two village officials on the Board of Governors of the New York State Government Finance Officers' Association. Olivo has been a Village employee since 1977 and Village Auditor since 1982. With Village Administrator Robert Schoelle, Olivo supervises the preparation and administration of the Village's operating and capital budgets. "This is a real feather in the cap of Jim Olivo to be recognized by his peers statewide for his contributions to municipal finance," said Mayor Peter A. Bee. "We all know what an excellent job he does and now, through the Association's educational programs, Jim will be a mentor to others in the field of municipal finance. His election also validates the perspicacity of Garden City's leaders 25 years ago in naming him to the key fiscal post of Village Auditor." The Government Finance Officers' Association is a professional organization with more than 1,200 public and private finance professionals throughout New York State. Its stated mission is to "enhance and promote the professional management of governmental resources by identifying, developing and advancing financial strategies, policies and practices for the public benefit." Olivo holds both bachelor's and master's degrees in business administration from Hofstra University. He's a past president of the Long Island Village Clerks and Treasurers Association and the New York State Society of Municipal Finance Officers. He lives in North Merrick with his wife and three sons. "I've worked with Jim Olivo for virtually my entire career in Garden City," said Village Administrator Schoelle, "and he is probably the biggest single reason why Garden City's bond ratings are consistently rated at the top level by national bond rating agencies. That means we save millions in borrowing costs. He's truly a dedicated professional who has served our Village well. We all share his pride in his election."
