Local Activist Honored Ellen Schuler Mauk of Garden City, a deeply involved unionist at the statewide and national levels, was recently awarded the Higher Education Member of the Year Award at New York State United Teachers' 35th Representative Assembly in Washington, D.C. "Ellen has worked tirelessly to make sure community college students have a positive and successful experience in school," said NYSUT President Richard C. Iannuzzi. "She has had an impact on not only the local level, but on the state and national levels." In addition to serving the Faculty Association of Suffolk Community College for more than 30 years, including 28 years as its president and chief negotiator, Schuler Mauk represents community colleges on the NYSUT Board of Directors. She also chairs NYSUT's Community College Conference and serves on the American Federation of Teachers Program and Policy Council. Schuler Mauk is also credited with establishing the Thomas C. Moody Humanitarian Award. The award was named after Thomas Moody, a New York City Fire Department captain and adjunct faculty member in the Fire Protection Technology program at Suffolk Community College who was killed in the World Trade Center attack on 9/11.
