Alvin Ailey

Family Performance

The Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater, one of the world's premier dance troupes and a tradition at Tilles Center for the Performing Arts, returns with a special one-hour family performance on Saturday, April 21. The 2 pm performance, under the artistic direction of Judith Jamison and the associate artistic direction of Masazumi Chaya. is part of Stage Two: The Arts Start Here, a series for children of all ages and their families. The series is sponsored by Astoria Federal Savings and NIC Holding Corp. On the program for the 2 pm performance are Ailey's signature work, Revelations, and Love Stories, Judith Jamison's dynamic collaboration with hip-hop pioneer Rennie Harris and modern dance maverick Robert Battle that is set to music by Stevie Wonder.

Tilles Center presents a Family Workshop in connection with this program. The workshop, which offers hands-on art activities related to the performance, takes place at 1 pm. Admission is $5 per person; there is no charge for those who hold family memberships. Beginning with its formation in 1958, the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater forever changed perceptions of American dance. The company is dedicated to the preservation and enrichment of American modern dance and to the uniqueness of black cultural expression.

Tickets for Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater's one-hour family performance at Tilles Center's North Fork Hall on Saturday, April 21 at 2 pm are $35 and $22. Vladimir Feltsman

Pianist Vladimir Feltsman, an artist of immense range and insight, presents a recital at Tilles Center for the Performing Arts on Sunday, April 15. The 3 pm concert is in Tilles Center's North Fork Hall. On the program are Mussorgky's Pictures at an Exhibition and two works by Beethoven: Piano Sonata No. 8 (Pathétique) and Piano Sonata No. 31.

A highly sought-after soloist and regular collaborator with the world's leading orchestras, Vladimir Feltsman appears on the top rank of the world's prestigious concert stages, from Carnegie Hall to St. Petersburg's Mariinsky Theater. He was born in Moscow, making his debut with the Moscow Philharmonic at the age of 11 after which he entered the Moscow Tchaikovsky State Conversatory of Music. Feltsman won the 1971 Grand Prix at the Marguerite Long International Piano Competition. He emigrated to the U.S. in 1987 and made his Carnegie Hall debut the same year, immediately becoming established as a major pianist on the American scene. Active also as an educator, Feltsman holds the Distinguished Chair of Professor of Piano at SUNY-New Paltz and teaches at Mannes College of Music.

Tickets for Vladimir Feltsman's 3 pm recital at Tilles Center's North Fork Hall on Sunday, April 15 are $90, $68 and $48 (seniors $87, $65, $45).
