GC Needs Code

To the Editor:

Another example of why local governments need a Code of Ethics with teeth and a Board to administer it was published in Newsday on April 10, 2007.

Apparently, the Town of Islip is in the process of attempting to revamp its Code of Ethics and simplify its Building Department procedures, but not without opposition.

Why there is opposition to a Code of Ethics, except by those who wish to profit from the loop holes is difficult for me to understand.

Both New York State and Nassau County see a strong need for such a strengthened Code; local governments and school boards should join in and do the same.

What do you think?

Joseph A. Calamari

P.S. To date, to my knowledge, our Village government has given no indication of its intentions in this area.

P.P.S. It is rumored that an employee of the Recreation Department's salary has quadrupled without any change in responsibilities. If true, could it be that a strengthened Code of Ethics would have prevented this from occurring?
