Garden City High School Science Research students marked the 197th birthday of Charles Darwin at this year's Darwin Day hosted by Hofstra University. Charles Darwin, himself, portrayed by Associated Professor of Geology J Bret Bennington, made a much anticipated appearance. Hofstra faculty members and students also were on hand to discuss evolution, natural selection, and the insights into human behavior generated by Darwin's theories.
Charles Darwin was born on February 12, 1809 in Shrewsbury, England. The Hofstra celebration is just one of many worldwide events organized each year to mark the day. Participation in Darwin Day is an example of the Garden City School District's ongoing effort to provide its students with access to the many educational resources available on nearby college campuses.
