During the month of April, The Garden City Historical Society is hosting its Second Annual Children's Art Exhibit, at which all the artwork received from our young artists will be displayed. Families, friends and visitors are invited to view the artwork at The Garden City Historical Society Museum, 109 Eleventh Street, on Saturdays and Sundays, through April 29 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The children's artwork depicts various doors around our Village, from firehouse and train station doors, to home entranceway doors, to doors on churches and historic buildings, and doors that reflect the business of daily life. The photography section of the art exhibit includes several dozen entries from Garden City High School, and these photographs, almost entirely in black and white, are not to be missed. They are a fine tribute to the high school's photography coursework and teachers. The Society held at reception for the winning students on March 25. We extend our thanks to Garden City's young people for their participation and to their family members for supporting the children's efforts and the Society's annual children's initiative. We also wish to thank all of the Garden City schools and their staff for their support, and Mary Palmberg, Nick Scudero and Mary Jane Caldwell who graciously served as our judges. Ms. Caldwell, a retired high school art teacher, is chairperson of the Society's Education Committee and coordinated the children's art exhibit. During the April Children's Art Exhibit, the Society will be selling packaged note cards that feature the winning entries of our 2006 art contest, "Landmark Buildings of Garden City." Each package includes 14 cards and envelopes, and sells for $15. The criteria for last year's contest specified that all entries depict Village structures that date to 1935 or prior. The contest dovetails with the Society's Historic Structure Survey, a documentation of residential and non-residential structures in the Village from the same time period. The current buildings in the survey can be viewed on our website, www.gardencityhistoricalsociety.org. Visitors can also stop at the Society's virtual "Store" and see all the items that are available in our gift shop, from our best seller, the Garden City afghans (now in blue) to our newest items, an "Old Garden City Hotel" decorative tile and a brass ornament of The Garden City Historical Society Museum.
