Fifth Grade Girls Lacrosse Opener

The gray team was at mid-season form with great passing, catching, ground balls, and goalie saves. The 7-3 victory saw great unselfish play as all seven goals were assisted. The midfield play of Annie Blanco (8 ground balls), Shannon Callahan (7 ground balls), Stacey Madelmayer (5 ground balls), Maggie Rogers, Katie O'Neill, and Hannah Eilbeck and homes Jackie Marino, Kristen Fitzsimmons, and Brianne Griffith was exceptional as Garden City dominated time of possession. Annie Blanco started the scoring on an assist by Shannon. Katie O'Neill scored the second goal on a strong move to the cage and deposited a low hard shot in the goal. Annie assisted. Farmingdale then scored before the close the 1st quarter to make the score 2-1 GC.

The second quarter opened with Shannon winning the draw (as she did most of the day) and hitting Brianne Griffith with a crisp pass. Brianne spotted Maggie Rogers who beat 2 defenders before being fouled. Maggie scored on the free position to make it 3-1 GC. Shannon won the draw and on a great give and go with Maggie Rogers, Shannon scored to make it 4-1. The defense of Maddy McGuire, Molly Adams, Zoe Karikas, Lauren Garizio, and Katie along with goalie Kristen Noonan shut out the Farmingdale for the remainder of the quarter. Kristen Noonan had a great save, a ground ball and 2 completed clearing passes.

Garden City started the second half on fire as the homes of Kristen Fitzsimmons, Helen Arellano, Kristen Noonan, and Brianne moved the ball great. Annie Blanco started the scoring after hustling for a ground ball. Maggie Rogers then scored her 2nd goal of the day on a pass from Annie. With the good sportsmanship rule in effect Jackie Marino, Molly Adams, Maddy McGuire, and Katie played great defense. All four girls had great double teams and clearing passes. Lauren Garizio had 2 point blank saves to shut them out for the 3rd quarter.

The 4th quarter saw Garden City's lead get tested as the sportsmanship rule gave the Dalers the much needed time of possession. After 2 Farmingdale goals brought the score to 6-3 Garden City, Annie Blanco scored her third goal on a great pass from Shannon. Goalie Lauren Garizio had one more clutch save and very good defense the remainder of the way led to a final score of 7-3 Garden City. The team collectively had 56!! completed passes on the day.
