Socially Speaking

Well, tomorrow is St. Patrick's Day and in New York City the color of the day is GREEN and in many places it is the same here on Long Island. We had our parade and now we can enjoy the one on Fifth Avenue. The Irish music has a wonderful lilt to it and it seems to get your feet tapping no matter what your heritage is. We are now at the mid point of March and in just a few days Spring will be with us and the weather should be calming down. May the luck of the irish be with us and before you know it, the Easter Bunny will be hopping from house to house bringing candy and those colored Easter eggs. Somehow, when they are all those beautiful colors they always seem to taste better.

Georgene Harrison will be busy in April leading the Wide World of Books for the Garden City Branch of A.A.U.W. She selected "Life of Pi" which won Britian's most prestigious prize - The Booker Award. Sally Richmond is chairing the event. They are two busy ladies and always do a good job on anything they tackle.

Happy Birthday wishes go to Melissa Bradley, who will be celebrating her special day on the 17th and to Roslie Jahelke, who will do ditto on the 19th. May they both have a wonderful day and a great year to follow filled with nothing but health and happiness.

Happy Wedding Anniversary wishes go to Blanche and Donald Muller who will do their celebrating on March 23rd. May you both have a great time and a year filled with good health and much happiness and many more years of wedded bliss in which to enjoy all that and each other too.

There are two gentlemen who deserve a good deal of Thanks for all they have been doing for the people of this town and they do it as Volunteers. I am referring to both Sal Catania and Tom Richmond, who give so much time, effort, and thought to the programs for the Library's Monday and Thursday shows and for many other things that come our way at our local Garden City Library. They deserve both our thanks and our support so do say Thank You to them the next time you enjoy one of the lovely programs that they have arranged for us. We all love you both.

Carolyn and Rudy Kaiser have returned from their trip through the Panama Canal and also San Diego and other places in California where they took in the sights and visited friends. The one fly in the ointment was the very cool temperatures in what they thought of as sunny California. Carolyn did get a new sweater out of the trip as who would think of packing warm clothes out there. We are happy to have them home again.

Regina Dowling was not unhappy with the cold as she went to Utah for the skiing and reports have it that the snow was great. Good to have you home again but happy you had such a good time.

Doris Forster, Carol Countryman, Pat Dalton and Mary Polak enjoyed learning all about the W.P.A. art works here on Long Island at the Community Club's program by Natalie Naylor this past week. We have one of those murals right here in Garden City and it is on the wall at the Garden City Post Office - so the next time you go to buy stamps you can enjoy looking at it. There are also quite a few in Hempstead and some in the Old Courthouse on Franklin Avenue that is being restored. Can't wait to see them again.

It was with deep regret that I read in last week's paper of the poor attendance at the Garden City School's forum on the findings of the Pride Survey. In today's world parents cannot hide their heads in the sand with denial about what young people are doing. It is far better to know what is going on and to know what to do about it. I do urge all parents to get involved in all aspects of their children's lives - it can only help them.

And now, don't forget to Vote on Tuesday, March 20th at the Village Hall from Noon to 9 p.m. It's not only our right and our privilege, but it's our obligation. See you at the polls.
