village fields are closed

Now that March is here and Village coaches are getting ready to start their spring seasons, this is a reminder that the Recreation Department's fields are not yet open for practices or games. We will notify all program heads when the field are ready for play. Please do not use the fields until further notice.

spring men's softball league forming

The Garden City Recreation Department spring soft ball league for men is beginning registration. Rosters will be accepted from teams meeting the following eligibility requirements:

1. Teams comprised of employees of businesses located in the Inc. Village of Garden City, and/or

2. Teams comprised of current residents of the Inc. Village of Garden City, and/or

3. Teams comprised of employees of the Inc. Village of Garden City.

The fee for this league will be $500, which covers umpire fees, balls, and trophies. Applications will not be accepted without a completed roster package. This includes a signed consent form, a completed roster, a copy of each player's current driver's license, and a check to cover the league fee.

Roster packages area available for pick up in the Recreation Office of Village Hall. The deadline for submitting completed applications will be Thursday, March 29 th. League play will begin after Easter.

With the Spring Sports Season upon us, the Recreation Department would like our residents to know that, although the Recreation Department allow the various volunteer organization to use the village field space, it does not run any of the spring programs. Below is a list of program heads for each sport. Please call them in the event of any questions.

junior round robin open house

The Garden City recreation Department's Tennis Staff will offer an Open House of our Junior Round Robin Tennis Program on Sunday, March 4 th from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. at Community Park's Tennis Facility.

The Recreation Department's Round Robin Tennis Program is a Junior League Intraclub Program for children ages 9-18. This progarm offers competitive match play formatted to fit each child's playing level.

The league is organized by age and playing ability. Interested children MUST be able to serve for the baseline, sustain a slow paced rally, keep score unassisted and have an understanding of the rules of tennis.

This program will be minimally supervised during match play. The matches will be set up by our teaching staff. All matches will be held on Sundays between 2 and 4 p.m. The league will begin on Sunday, March 11th.

If you choose to participate in this league, the cost of the 8 week program will be $130.

preschool arts and crafts beginning

The Recreation Department will begin its third sessions of Preschool Arts and Crafts the week of March 7 th. this six week program is held at St. Paul's Cluett Hall and is open to children ages 3 1/2 to 5 years old who are residents of the Inc. Village of Garden City.

Children interested in this program may register for either Wednesday or Thursday sessions. The 45 minute class begins at 12:15 p.m. the cost of each six week session is $30.

The child registering MUST be 3 1/2 by March 7 th in order to register for a session. To register, please visit the Recreation Office in Village Hall.

OPEN GYM FOR MIDDLE SCHOOL AND HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS

On Wednesdays and Thursdays in the months of January and February, the field House will be open and supervised from 3:30 to 5:45 p.m. for students of Middle and High School age to use for basketball. In addition, volleyball will be offered on Thursdays for the same age groups. The games are strictly pickup, and no organized practices are allowed. This time is for middle and high school youngsters to enjoy games and socializing on their own. The Field House will be supervised by the Recreation Staff, so no parents will be allowed in the field house during this time.

adult swim at adelphi

The Recreation Department's adult swim program will begin on Monday, October 16 th at Adelphi's indoor pool located in Woodruff Hall. This free program is open to any adult resident of the Inc. Village of Garden City, aged 18 or older. The pool is open for lap swimming on Mondays through Thursdays in one hour time blocks at 7:30 p.m., 8:30 p.m. and 9:30 p.m.

Anyone interested in this program must sign up through the Recreation Office. You must register each day you would like to swim by calling the Recreation Office at 465-4075. No reservations will be taken ahead of time and space is limited.

The Recreation Department's Adult Programs in the Field House begin on Monday, October 16 th, according to the following schedule:

These programs are open to residents of the Inc. Village of Garden City who have graduated high school. All programs listed are free of charge and strictly "pick up". A picture ID is required to sign in to any program. For further information, please contact the Recreation Office at 465-4075.

Aerobic classes are held in St. Paul's Cluett Hall according to the following schedule:

Our instructors are up to date on the latest moves to keep you interested while exercising. Pat and Joy have years of experience and can show the individual how to modify the exercises to their levels.

To attend a single class, you only need to show on a given day and pay $4.00. If you would like to attend regularly, then we have 20 class passes that cost $60, a savings of $1.00 per class.
