"Multiple Sclerosis: The Latest Findings"

Winthrop-University Hospital's Perspectives in Health series will offer a free lecture, "Multiple Sclerosis: The Latest Findings," on Tuesday, March 20, 2007, at 7:00 PM. Held at Winthrop's Community Outreach Center, 101 Mineola Boulevard at the corner of Second Street in Mineola, the program will focus on the latest advances in treatment that can help manage the disease.

Malcolm Gottesman, MD, Chief of the Division of Neurology and Director of the Multiple Sclerosis Center at Winthrop, will discuss MS, focussing on the newer medications, including Tysabri(r). Dr. Gottesman also will address current and future research trials.

"Although we have no cure yet," said Dr. Gottesman, "the last 10 years have been a watershed decade for advances in treatment options, which have evolved from a single medication to the use of multiple drugs in combination that can stabilize patients and retard progression."

Sharon-Friedman Urevich, RN, NP, Coordinator of Winthrop's MS Program; Eileen Boylan, RN, and Denise Cheng, RN, will the practical aspect of Tysabri(r), as well as other medications. A question and answer period will follow the lecture.
