Socially Speaking

"March came in like a Lion." Well if your definition of a lion is a very wet and bedraggled one - it certainly did. Of course, the old saying was that when March came in like a lion, it went out as a lamb and vice versa. I guess we are all hoping for the lamb to come as soon as possible. Sights seen around town on one of the first days of March were a very nice but melting snowman on Meadbrook Road and a snappy convertible with the top down (is there any other way?) driving along Merillon Avenue on that sunny Saturday last week. I hope all of you took advantage of the eclipse of the moon that same evening. It will be August 28 th before we see one again. Spring is coming and so is Daylight Savings Time - so remember to set your clocks ahead this Saturday night before you go to bed or you will be late for everything on Sunday.

One of my favorite Balls - The Phantom Ball is not about to take place for the G.C. Unit of the American Cancer Society on a date that will be named on the coming invitations. This year, Christine Diller and Maureen Taylor will be Co-Chairing the non-event and for your donation of $25 you get a chance to win one of their lovely prizes (the prizes are real). Phyllis Mistretta will be accepting donations at 165 Meadow Street, G.C. N.Y. and your donation is tax deductible. Do help - the ladies work so hard on this event.

The Board of The Friends of the Adelphi University Library held a meeting recently to plan for a very special event - their 60 th anniversary. They were founded in 1947 by a group of dedicated alumni, faculty members, faculty wives, and local citizens. Attending the meeting were President Gregg Scheiner, Past President Noel Burks, Gladys Clemmensen, Joan Kuster, and Bernedette Pepin, among a number of others. We can hardly wait to see what they have planned.

The next Thursday Lunch Group of the Garden City Community Church will meet on March 22 nd and Maxine Cunningham and Carole Halvorsen will be the hostesses. The group meets at the G. C. Community Church at noon. Bring a sandwich as dessert and beverage will be provided by the hostesses. All are welcome. Lisa Krebs-Borgen will talk on the importance of sleep and ways to improve it. Call the church at 746-1700 if you need transportation.

Mary Knox and Joan Stafford represented the Garden City Branch of the American Association of University Women at the United Nation this past February. The rights of children (physical, emotional and legal) as well as their educational entitlements were the main topics of the meeting. Good for you, ladies, and I know you bring the information back to the branch members.

I hope that all you bridge fans got your reservations in to Rose Forgione at 100 Tanners Pond Road in Garden City for the big 88 th Birthday bash of the American Legion on Sunday, March 25 th at the Senior Center in town. A hot meal, wine, beer and soda and, of course, birthday cake come with the $20 tab. How can you beat it? They are limited to 20 tables because of space so get your reservation in today. Bring your own cards.

Happy birthday wishes go to Thomas Bradley, who will be celebrating his special day on March 12 th. May he have a wonderful day and a great year ahead in which to enjoy both good health and much happiness.

The Executive Board of the Helen Keller Services for the Blind - G.C. League will meet in the small room, lower level of the G.C. Library on Monday March 12 th to make plans for the coming season. Aurora Vinciguarra is 1st Vice President and in charge of membership so, if you are interested in helping this group in any way, give her a call and she will be happy to direct you to the right person. This group has been active in this most important field for a long time and they are to be congratulated for all that they do for both the blind and the sight impaired. If you have a little time to donate - donate it to them.

Remember that St. Patrick's Day is coming so get out your green as everyone can claim to be Irish on that day. See you next week.
