The following events are at the GC Public Library, Seventh Street, Garden City in the first week of March: Dancing with the Stars? How about dancing with Garden City toddlers? If you and your toddler love to dance, sign up for the program "Toddler Tango" with Nancy Buggé. The program is for Garden City residents ages 21/2-5 (no kindergarten), with an adult. This program will be held on Saturday, March 10. Pick one time slot, 9:30 a.m. or 10:30 a.m. It's not too late to register for story time. Please check with a Children's Librarian for availability. Get Connected @ Your Library during the American Library Association/Young Adult Library Services Teen Tech Week. The Library's Young Adult Department has bookmarks and prizes for young adults who come in and request them during the week of March 4 through March 10. First come, first served. Prizes available while supplies last. There is also a display of tech books for your enjoyment. The second part of the "Babysitting Workshop," focusing on first aid and child care, will be held on Wednesday, March 7 from 3:45 p.m. to 5:45 p.m. This session will be given by JoAnn Tanck, RN and Georgette Basso, RN, neonatal nurses at Winthrop University Hospital. Do not forget to bring a doll to this session. Participants who attended the first session on February 27 need to be present at this session to be awarded a certificate of completion. The American Library Association has announced the winner and honor books of the Michael L. Printz Award for excellence in Young Adult Literature for 2007. The winner is: American Born Chinese, by Gene Luen Yang. The honor books are: The Astonishing Life of Octavian Nothing, Traitor to the Nation, vol. 1: The Pox Party, by M.T. Anderson; An Abundance of Katherines, by John Green; The Book Thief, by Markus Zusak; and Surrender, by Sonya Hartnett. These are on display in the Young Adult section. Books, books, books... the latest non-fiction young-adult titles, the Sisterhood series and other, "if you liked... " chick-lit titles, books on self improvement, and the newest college guides/test prep titles are on display. The other display racks have books for the school assignments about which the Library has been notified. There is something for everyone. Celebrate St. Patrick's Day as the Library welcomes back retired NYC detective Ed Deacy, now a successful cabaret entertainer and actor. Mr. Deacy was recently awarded the title of "New York State's Senior Idol." Ed brings his extensive songbook of lilting Irish ballads, lullabies, and nostalgic tunes to the Library for a celebration of the Emerald Isle the whole family can enjoy. Sing along to "Danny Boy," "The Whistling Gypsy," "The Wild Colonial Boy," "Galway Bay," and so much more! Police Report: Mischief and Mayhem: On February 27 , there was a larceny of a $900 GPS system from a BMW parked at Field 11... Someone damaged a $200 rear light on a car parked overnight in a Tannerspond Rd. driveway... Over $14,000 in computers and software was taken from a GC Plaza office between February 26 and 27... The driver's side door lock to a 1999 Chevrolet Tahoe was found damaged at Field 9 E on February 27. $2500 in damage... Between February 25 and 26, thieves stole 4 wheels valued at $3,000 off an Acura parked in the Hempstead Lincoln lot... PO Graber arrested a 19-year-old female employee at Lord and Taylor, Franklin Avenue, after the woman allegedly took $250 from the cash register there... A 58-year-old Lynbrook woman allegedly took over $480 in fashion jewelry at Lord and Taylor on February 23... On the same day , PO Bandl stopped a 27-year-old St. Alban's woman for alleged speeding and for alleged DWI(.10%) at 4:30 AM near Stewart Ave./Lee... $100 was taken from a cabinet at GC Plaza on February 24... On the same day , a 28-year-old Hicksville woman allegedly took $450 in merchandise at Lord and Taylor, which included a Buffalo top, Guess top and jeans, a BCBG top, and BCBG dress... Between February 22 and 23, someone took a red 2005 Ford Explorer at the GC Hotel... On February 20 , someone damaged a 2005 Honda parked in field 7 S. $200 damage... On February 21 , detectives Barone and Wedra arrested a 41-year-old Staten Island man for aggravated harassment 2nd degree, after the man allegedly made threatening calls to his ex-girlfriend who works at a Franklin Avenue business...A 39-year-old Valley Stream woman allegedly took children's socks and underwear at Sears on February 21... On February 22 , a neighbor on Linden Street, reported that a burglar had exited the rear of a house there. Police arrived and found that a rear window was damaged and over $15,000 in assorted jewelry was stolen... A $1500 laptop was taken from GC Plaza between February 21 and 22... A truck stop was held on Clinton Rd. on February 21. 18 trucks were inspected with 84 tickets issued, and 9 trucks taken out of service. DOT at scene... PO Jacobsen and PO Hickey arrested a 40-year-old Roosevelt man on an outstanding warrant for the possession of a controlled substance, at Hilton Ave./Second Street on February 20, after the man was reported as soliciting money there... Between February 16 and 18, credit cards were taken from a car at Franklin Court...T he same thing occurred at Third Place between February 20 and 21... PO Bandl arrested a 42-year-old Franklin Square man for allegedly not signaling a turn and for aggravated unlicensed operation 2nd degree at Cherry Valley Avenue/Ninth St. on February 21... Fire Responses: On February 24 , 1:58 AM, there was a fire on Middleton Rd.The occupant of the home was transported to Nassau University Medical Center where she suffered first and second degree burns. Three hand lines were used to put out the fire and there was mutual aid from surrounding communities. A Fire Marshal was at the scene and the fire was later determined to be caused by smoking... There was an overload of electricity to a toaster at the University Center, Adelphi University, on February 28... FD shut off a boiler at a Vassar St. residence on February 18... A car left running in a garage at Wilson St. caused levels of carbon monoxide there on February 22... A 19-month- old child locked grandma out of the house at Clinton Rd. on February 28 and the FD removed the door there to gain entry...That's all this week. G. T. | |||||
