Varsity Wings Win Three of Last Four On January 15 the Wings played a rematch against Sewanhaka. Tom Greco opened the scoring for the Wings assisted by Eric Diller and Tim Moynihan. Sewanhaka would score twice on the power play to end the first period. The Wings would respond on the power play when John Mendicino would find the net on a set up by Aaron Kim. Mendicino then set up Matt Valitutto-Gaudiosi to give the Wings the lead. The third period would see Aaron Kim again set up Mendicino on the power play. Although Sewanhaka would score again, the Wings would hold the one goal margin and secure the victory 4-3. Goalie Jimmy Georgas came up big making 24 saves for the Wings. On January 29 the Wings faced Syosset, a rematch of a Wings victory the first time around. The first period was hard fought and seemed an even match. Nick Greco would open the scoring with only minutes remaining in the first period assisted by John Mendicino and Spiros Markopoulos. The Wings had a rough second period as Syosset would score four times and only be answered twice on Wings goals by Tom Greco, assisted by both his wingers Aaron Kim and Eric Diller, and by Spiros Markopoulos from John Mendicino. Down 4-3 the Wings had to pull off a third period come from behind victory. Jimmy Georgas replaced an injured Brian Johnston in goal. Johnston had made 20 saves for the Wings. Mendicino would put in a rebound off a Tom Rossidis point shot for a power play goal to tie it at 4. Less than a minute later Nick Greco would get his second goal of the game on a tremendous short-handed effort. Aaron Kim would find Nick Greco at 7:41 to give Greco the hat trick. Further sealing the fate of their opponents, Tom Rossidis would make the score 7-4 Wings on a set up from Mendicino and Markopoulos. In a rescheduled game against St. Mary's on February 3, the teams would exchange power play goals during the first period with the Wings goal by John Mendicino assisted by Nick Greco. The Wings would score twice in the second period. The first was on a short-handed steal by John Mendicino. Two minutes later, Mendicino would pass to a wide Nick Greco whose shot on goal would rebound to a net-crashing Pat Donahue for his first goal as a Varsity player. With the score 4-3 in favor of St. Mary's, the Wings would pull goalie Davey Logan, who made 36 saves, for the extra attacker. Despite playing one of their best games of the season so far, St. Mary's would score on the empty net and the Wings would lose the game by a score of 5-3. The season's game 16 would see the Wings face second place Plainview. The Wings would have their full line-up as players returned from injury and they would face Plainview's full bench. The Wings came out pumped for the game and though Plainview would score first on a power play, the Wings would answer three times. Nick Greco would score from John Mendicino. Eric Diller would make it two on an individual effort and with seconds remaining in the first period and Wings power play, Nick Greco would pass back to Tom Rossidis, on the point, who would find John Mendicino in the slot for the goal. The second period was all Wings. Again on the power play, Aaron Kim would pass to Spiros Markopoulos who would then find John Mendicino again in the slot for his second goal of the game. The third period started with the Wings leading by a score of 5-1. Plainview would score two more times but the Wings would hold on to that two-goal margin and win the game 5-3. Goalie Jimmy Georgas made 23 saves to help the Wings earn the victory. The Wings have really picked up their game during the second half of the season. They are playing well as a team both offensively and defensively. With four games remaining in the season, there is some great hockey action coming up.
