In Memoriam
Eleanor Stockton Nohe passed January 16, 2007, at age 96, of natural causes. Eleanor was a long-time resident of Garden City and also resided in Nassau Point, NY and Naples, FL. Born in Astoria, Queens, in 1910, she was the daughter Martha and Charles Stockton. She worked from 1927 to 1935 for Peabody, Wilson, and Brown, a New York City architecture firm. While working she transcribed the manuscript copy of Mutiny on the Bounty by Charles Nordhoff and James Normal Hall. In 1934, she married George L. Nohe, who predeceased her in 1998. In 1940 she and George moved to Garden City where she spent half of her life. While living in Garden City she was an active member of Garden City Community Church during its formative years, helping to build the Garden City Community Church edifice currently located on Stewart Avenue. As a member of the church she served as president of the Women's Auxiliary and the Couple's Club. She also served on the Winthrop Hospital Auxiliary. In 1970 they moved to Cutchogue, NY where she and George were active fundraisers for Eastern Long Island Hospital. At the hospital she volunteered at for the Treasurer's Exchange. She was also a long time member of the North Fork Country Club. She is survived by her children; Jane Nelson of Garden City, NY, and Bob Nohe, of Bradenton, FL; grandchildren Susan Quinn of Warren, ME, Barbara Mahini of Red Hook, PA, Bruce Nohe of Wilton CT, Doug Nelson of Garden City, Martha Yasso of Garden City; and great-grandchildren; Cameron, Courtland, and Dana Mahini, and Ian Yasso.
