A Word From The Publisher

Several of our letters this week discuss the effects of last week's ice storm, which made getting around very difficult, both on foot and by car.

One letter discusses an incident when a driver was ticketed for not parking head-in even though he says he could not see the space markings on the pavement due to the ice, and claims that the parking officer was asleep in his vehicle. Undoubtedly, the Garden City Police Department will look into the matter, although there may of course be another side to the story. Perhaps the officer was on a meal break, for example...

We've personally always wondered what the point of the "park heading in" rule is in parking lots where the conformation of the lot doesn't require it. In lots where the spaces are not angled and if there is no parking sticker required (which is normally placed on the rear of the car) why not allow drivers the minor joy of finding an occasional "pull-through" space? As the driver of a large vehicle with poor rear visibility, we always feel a little safer leaving a parking space going forward than backward, but that is just our own humble opinion.

We have received a number of entries for the First Amendment essay contest sponsored by the New York Press Association. We will publish the winning entry in next week's issue of the paper.

Now that Valentines Day is over, maybe it's time to take down those Christmas wreaths that we've seen on doors around town. (Again, just our humble opinion....)
