"Make Osteoporosis Matter" Topic of Free Lecture Winthrop-University Hospital's Women's Health Forum will offer a free lecture, "Make Osteoporosis Matter: Fact & Fiction About Therapies" on Wednesday, February 28, 2007, at 7:00 PM. Held at Winthrop's Community Outreach Center, 101 Mineola Boulevard at the corner of Second Street in Mineola, the program will provide the latest information on the prevention, early detection and treatment of the disease. According to the United States Surgeon General's office, by the year 2020, half of all Americans over age 50 will be at risk for fractures from osteoporosis and low bone mass. Osteoporosis is a "silent" condition because many Americans are unaware that their bone health is in jeopardy. "The first step in preventing and treating osteoporosis is learning if you are at risk," stated Jane Greensher, RN, MA, CCRC, Clinical Research Coordinator of the Bone Mineral Research Center. "If it's determined that you are at risk, the good news is that there are now steps you can take to prevent bone loss and decrease your fracture risk." Ms. Greensher and Linda Radler, MPA, PT, Director of Physical Therapy, will discuss current research and new medications, as well as the benefits of proper body mechanics, posture, and weight bearing exercises. A question and answer period will follow the lecture. Attendees are asked to arrive at 6:45 PM and to park in the rear of the building. Seating is limited and reservations are required. To register, please call 1-888-53-WOMEN. The Women's Health Forum is a community health education program coordinated by Women's Health Services, part of Winthrop's Institute for Family Care.
