What's Up For Young Adults At The Library

WINNERS DRAWN

The raffles were drawn for the three autographed copies of Forever In Blue: The Fourth Summer Of The Sisterhood by Ann Brashares. The lucky Young Adult winners were Jackie McManus, 11th grade, Victoria Sollin, 7th grade and Caroline Paxton, 9th grade. Congratulations to all. Enjoy the book!

WINTER RECESS

Take advantage of the freedom from classes and homework and do some leisure reading. The newest in young adult fiction, non-fiction, magazines are on display and waiting to be checked out and read. Catch up or refresh yourself on Harry Potter's escapades before the release of the last installment.

BABYSITTING WORKSHOP

Learn the basic responsibilities of babysitting and how to react in an emergency at this two-part workshop. Open to all young adults in grades 6-12, registration began on Saturday, February 10th in person, by phone or email. The first part of the workshop, the safety session will be given cooperatively by Assistant Superintendent of Recreation, Ed Fronkwicz and Detective Richard Pedone of the Youth Bureau of the Garden City Police Department. This session will be held on Tuesday, February 27, 3:45-5:15 PM. At the second part of the workshop, the focus is on first aid and child care. This session is given by JoAnn Tanck, RN and Georgette Basso, RN neonatal nurses at Winthrop University Hospital. This session will be held on Wednesday, March 7, 3:45-5:45 PM. Do Not Forget to Bring a Doll to this session. Participants must attend both sessions to be awarded a certificate of completion.

ON DISPLAY

American Library Association Announces Winners

The winner and honor books of the Michael L. Printz Award for excellence in Young Adult Literature have been announced for 2007. The winner is: American Born Chinese by Gene Luen Yang. The honor books are: The Astonishing Life of Octavian Nothing, Traitor to the Nation, vol. 1: The Pox Party, by M. T. Anderson, An Abundance of Katherines, by John Green, The Book Thief by Markus Zusak and Surrender by Sonya Hartnett. These are on display in the Young Adult section.

Books, books, books...the latest non-fiction young adult titles, The Sisterhood series and other, "if you liked..." chick lit titles, books on self improvement and the newest college guides/test prep titles are on display. The other display racks have books for the school assignments about which the library has been notified. There is something for everyone.

IN THE NEWS BULLETIN BOARD

Check the bulletin board as you enter the Young adult section of the library. Posted are news clippings of Garden City Young Adults as well as information on prize winning contests.

COLLEGE PREP

There are new displays for Young Adults. One has the newest sources for college search, financial aid/scholarships, and standardized tests preparation. A second has the latest, just -received non-fiction for young adults. A third has a monthly display. This month it is in honor of Black History. And the fourth is reserved for special assignments sent from the schools. Take a look.

If signing up electronically please include name, address, phone number and grade in the message and indicate which program you are interested in.
