Boy's Fencing Team Wins Nassau County Championship

The Boy's Garden City Fencing Team defeated Jericho High School 14-9 at Garden City High School on Saturday February 10th to claim the Nassau County Championship. After defeating fourth seeded Great Neck South 14-8, they went on to beat Jericho in a thrilling match. The Garden City Team has great depth with 29 fencers. With only three seniors graduating they should be a formidable force in future seasons.

Finishing the Nassau County season at a perfect 12-0, they now go on to face the Suffolk County champion on February 13th at Ward Melville High School.

Led by senior captains Kevin Oliver, Frank Chiodo and Mike DeRose and junior captain Kevin Clark this group has fenced together all through high school and this season was years in the making. These young men proved that hard work and dedication do pay off.

The foil squad of starters Kevin Oliver, Kendall Pauley, and Mike Philippou with alternates Steve Tamke, Eric Giacometti, and James Docherty, was Garden City's most dangerous and unbeatable weapon.

Starting for the saber squad is Frank Chiodo, Mike DeRose and Tyler Hancock with alternates Ryan O'Halloran, Phil Tangel and Brian Way. They proved to be one of the toughest squads in the county.

The epee squad of starters Kevin Clark, John Wolf, and Matt Giacometti with alternates Bryan Sullivan and Andrew Nanayakkara put tremendous pressure on other teams by winning key critical bouts for Garden City.

Xavier Alisse, Franklin Dickinson, Ryan Kennedy, Matt Keenan, Mike Lyons, Andrew Nicolosi, Neil Patel, Eric Philippou, Jonathan Philippou, Max Sonner, Mike Szuba and Joe Wolf will represent Garden City at the JV county tournament at Great Neck South High School on February 14th.

The team was kept completely focused by men's head coach Ed Burton and assistant coach Mike Lynch. They enjoyed the full support of Garden City athletic director Nancy Kalafus.

The 30 fencer strong women's team and their coach Mike Kreidman were there side by side with the men's team the whole season and had a very successful fencing season of their own.
