Garden City Library News An Afternoon Of Irish Music Sunday March 11th at 1:30 PM Garden City Public Library Celebrate St. Patrick's Day as The Garden City Public Library welcomes back retired NYC detective Ed Deacy, now a successful cabaret entertainer and actor. Mr. Deacy was recently awarded the title of "New York State's Senior Idol." Ed brings his extensive songbook of lilting Irish ballads, lullabies and nostalgic tunes to the Garden City Public Library for a celebration of the Emerald Isle the whole family can enjoy. Sing along to Danny Boy, The Whistling Gypsy, The Wild Colonial Boy, Galway Bay, and so much more! Join us as all Irish eyes will be smiling on Sunday, March 11th at 1:30 PM. News From The Children's Room Chase away your winter blues - come to the Garden City Public Library for a taste of the warm Caribbean and do the Limbo while listening to Flamboko music. On February 20th at 11:00 AM, the Children's Department will present Conroy Warren and his "Tropical Breeze" program. No tickets, registration or passport required! But, please do remember to wear your best tropical shirt. This tropical program is for Garden City residents, ages 2 1/2 through Grade 5, and their families. On February 22 at 11:00 AM it's Family Movie time at the Garden City Public Library. Come out of the cold and watch the film, "The Little Polar Bear". This program is for Garden City residents, ages 2 1/2 through Grade 5, and their families. No tickets or registration required. Refreshments will be served. It's not too late to register for story time. Please check with a librarian for availability. You can still register for book discussions. Just come to the Children's Room. Chapter Chat, for children presently enrolled in Second Grade. Program is forty-five minutes. Wednesdays at 4:00 PM. Remaining session is on March 14 ("Jenius The Amazing Guinea Pig", by Dick King-Smith). New Friends in Books Club, for children presently enrolled in Third Grade. Program is forty-five minutes. Wednesdays at 5:00 PM. The remaining sessions: February 28 ("Akimbo and the Elephants" by Alexander McCall-Smith), and March 14 ("Bunnicula A Rabbit Tale of Mystery", by James Howe). The Page Turners, for children presently enrolled in Fourth and Fifth Grade: Remaining session: March 13 Book Discussion, "How to Eat Fried Worms" by Thomas Rockwell, watch worms at work and create an interesting snack. Priority for registration and participation is given to children who are Garden City Public Library cardholders. Book Discussion Group Gloria Weinrich, Panel Moderator, has announced the title of the next book to be discussed on Wednesday, February 28th from 10 a.m. until noon in the small downstairs meeting room under the auspices of The Friend of the Library. The five people you meet in heaven by Mitch Albom, tells the story of Eddie, an 83 year-old maintenance person at an amusement park. When he dies, he enters heaven where he encounters sequentially five pivotal figures from his life. Each person has been waiting for him in heaven. Each soul has s story to tell, a secret to reveal and a lesson to share. Through them, Eddie understands the meaning of his own life even as his arrival brings closure to theirs. This is a small, pure, poignant and simple book that is profoundly true. No registration is necessary but participation is limited to 20 patrons. Books may be picked up at the Reference Desk beginning on February 28th. A Night Of All Things Chocolate! Garden City Public Library Wednesday, March 28th at 7:00 PM A chocolate lovers idea of heaven- a night of all things chocolate! Chef and Chocolatier Lee Perrotta will entertain her audience with the history and lure of chocolate. There will be demonstrations and tastings of such delights as French truffles, individual dessert cups, ganache, fudge and much more. Registration is limited to adult Garden City residents and must be done in person. Registration begins Monday, March 19th at 9:30 AM. Garden City Public Library Sunday, March 18th at 2:00 PM Time to shake off the winter blues and shake something else! And, we have just the people who can teach us to do it right. The Aloha Iolani Hula Dance Troupe will be at the Garden City Public Library on Sunday March 18th at 2:00 PM to bring a taste of the Polynesian islands to our island. The company will entertain us with traditional dances from Hawaii and then teach us all to do the Hula. Join us for some fun, a lot of laughs, and a little exercise. Hula Dance Concert & Workshop Library Closed The Garden City Public Library will be closed on Sunday, February 18 and Monday, February 19 in observance of Presidents' Day. What's Up For Young Adults At The Library WINTER RECESS Take advantage of the freedom from classes and homework and do some leisure reading. The newest in young adult fiction, non-fiction, magazines are on display and waiting to be checked out and read. Catch up or refresh yourself on Harry Potter's escapades before the release of the last installment. BABYSITTING WORKSHOP Learn the basic responsibilities of babysitting and how to react in an emergency at this two-part workshop. Open to all young adults in grades 6-12, registration begins on Saturday, February 10th in person, by phone or email. The first part of the workshop, the safety session will be given cooperatively by Assistant Superintendent of Recreation, Ed Fronkwicz and Detective Richard Pedone of the Youth Bureau of the Garden City Police Department. This session will be held on Tuesday, February 27, 3:45-5:15 PM. At the second part of the workshop, the focus is on first aid and child care. This session is given by JoAnn Tanck, RN and Georgette Basso, RN neonatal nurses at Winthrop University Hospital. This session will be held on Wednesday, March 7, 3:45-5:45 PM. Participants must attend both sessions to be awarded a certificate of completion. ON DISPLAY American Library Association Announces Winners The winner and honor books of the Michael L. Printz Award for excellence in Young Adult Literature have been announced for 2007. The winner is: American Born Chinese by Gene Luen Yang. The honor books are: The Astonishing Life of Octavian Nothing, Traitor to the Nation, vol. 1: The Pox Party, by M. T. Anderson, An Abundance of Katherines, by John Green, The Book Thief by Markus Zusak and Surrender by Sonya Hartnett. These are on display in the Young Adult section. Books, books, books...the latest non-fiction young adult titles, romances for Valentine's Day, books of interest for Black History Month, and all the Sisterhood titles are on the display racks near the Young Adult desk. The other display racks have books for the school assignments about which the library has been notified. There is something for everyone. IN THE NEWS BULLETIN BOARD Check the bulletin board as you enter the Young adult section of the library. Posted are news clippings of Garden City Young Adults as well as information on prize winning contests. COLLEGE PREP There are new displays for Young Adults. One has the newest sources for college search, financial aid/scholarships, and standardized tests preparation. A second has the latest, just -received non-fiction for young adults. A third has a monthly display. This month it is in honor of Black History. And the fourth is reserved for special assignments sent from the schools. Take a look.
