Village Sports coliseum tickets no longer available It is with regret that the Recreation Department informs our residents that, due to a change in Nassau Coliseum's policies, our office will no longer be able to obtain tickets on consignment and will not be receiving tickets to any performances in the future. This incomparable duo will perform amazing feats of magic to charm and thrill our Garden City audience. Magic the Dog has appeared on "The View" and "Animal Planet." Admission for this show is $2.00, payable at the door. Reservations are necessary and can be made by calling the Recreation Office at 465-4075 by Friday, February 9th. holiday gym program at st. paul's The Recreation Department will run its very popular gym program during President's week. this free program will run from tuesday, february 20 - Friday, February 23 according to the following schedule: 9 - 10:30 a.m.Kindergarten and 1st grades 10:30 a.m. - noon2nd and 3rd grades Noon - 2 p.m.4th - 6th grades 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. 7th - 12th grades Games, activities and supervision will be provided by the Recreation Staff. for further information, please call the Recreation Office in Village Hall family movie during president's week The Garden City Recreation Department will show the movie "How To Eat Fried Worms," rated PG, at Cluett Hall on Wednesday, February 21st at 1 p.m. This movie is based on the hugely popular Thomas Rockwell book. Admission is free and snacks will be sold for a nominal charge. The running time for this movie is 98 minutes. family fun time on sundays On Sunday afternoons beginning January 14, the St. Paul's Field House will be open for "Family Fun" for Village families. This open time provides the opportunity for families to enjoy various gym activities in a indoor environment.The gym will be available for use from noon to 3:30 p.m. each Sunday until March. This time is designated for our residents to use on a family or individual basis. No organized practices or workouts will be allowed. Although there will be staff to monitor activity, this is not a drop off program. We ask the elementary aged children be accompanied by an adult. For the safety of our users, no lacrosse or baseball will be allowed. middle school recreation nights announced The Garden City Recreation Department is sponsoring Middle School Rec. Nights on the following dates at St. Paul's Field House: Friday, January 197th and 8th grades Friday, January 266th grade Friday, February 96th grade Friday, March 27th and 8th grades These parties will be chaperoned by the Recreation staff and will run from 7 to 9 p.m. Admission is $5.00. A DJ will provide music and refreshments will be available for a nominal charge. The gym will be open for basketball, volleyball, dancing and other games. Note- Once the children are in our facility for either of these programs, they will not be allowed to leave unless accompanied by an adult. Please come into the building to pick up your child. OPEN GYM FOR MIDDLE SCHOOL AND HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS On Wednesdays and Thursdays in the months of January and February, the field House will be open and supervised from 3:30 to 5:45 p.m. for students of Middle and High School age to use for basketball. In addition, volleyball will be offered on Thursdays for the same age groups. The games are strictly pickup, and no organized practices are allowed. This time is for middle and high school youngsters to enjoy games and socializing on their own. The Field House will be supervised by the Recreation Staff, so no parents will be allowed in the field house during this time. adult swim at adelphi The Recreation Department's adult swim program will begin on Monday, October 16th at Adelphi's indoor pool located in Woodruff Hall. This free program is open to any adult resident of the Inc. Village of Garden City, aged 18 or older. The pool is open for lap swimming on Mondays through Thursdays in one hour time blocks at 7:30 p.m., 8:30 p.m. and 9:30 p.m. Anyone interested in this program must sign up through the Recreation Office. You must register each day you would like to swim by calling the Recreation Office at 465-4075. Our previous three Wednesday special "game day" events were a big success. Players in Kindergarten, 1st, and 2nd Grade had a lot of fun. We are working to schedule more of these popular events. Announcing the pledge to be a S.T.A.R. Essay Contest! As a proud member of the Jr. NBA/Jr. WNBA, Garden City Basketball is encouraging all of our participants to submit a short 100 words or less essay on the importance of exhibiting S.T.A.R. Garden City Centennial Soccer Weekday Clinic Information for Boys and Girls The Centennials will be sponsoring Soccer Clinics for Girls in grades 2-9 and Boys in grades 2-6 who are registered in the spring program. Our clinic program is presenting the opportunity to those children who would like to have some fun, enhance their skills and play more soccer. These clinics are interchangeable and children can attend multiple clinics. Therefore, if a child in grade 2 cannot make the Tuesday clinic, they can attend the grade 2 clinic on Thursday. If a child in grade 2 or grade 3 would like to attend both clinic days (Tuesday & Thursday) they are welcome to do that. The same holds true for children in the older age groups. The Garden City Centennial Soccer Club will be opening their spring season on Saturday April 14th. The Centennial Intramural Soccer Program is open to all girls entering Kindergarten in September through 9th grade and all boys entering Kindergarten in September through 6th grade. Girls play 9 a.m. until 1 p.m. and boys play from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. The program runs for eight consecutive Saturday's with the exception of May 26th (Memorial Day Weekend). The season ends on June 9th with Soccerfest. Applications were due back by January 31, 2007. We have extended the deadline until Monday February 12th, any applications received after this date are subject to the late fee, no exceptions. GCAA Travel Basketball GCAA Travel Basketball's teams continue to compete at a very high level with 8 of the 14 teams in the top 5 in their respective divisions. Here are some of the highlights: Walczyk 5th Girls lead their division with an outstanding 9-1 record. Brian Tully and Robert Wotczak have powered Tully 5th Boys to a win last week and a 6-4 ledger. Basel 4th Girls have had fine defensive play from Bridget Liddy and Catherine Parente. Jillian Curtin's ballhandling has led GCAA Raphael to a 7-4 mark, best among 4th grade girls' teams. The backcourt play of Jess Stein and Marissa Cameron has propelled Kiffel 7th Girls who now stand at 7-3. Raphael 8th Boys have reached first place in their league with an overall record of 8-4. Kathryn Montgomery and Jenna Fuchs fuel a tenacious pressing defense for Basel/Capetola 7th Girls. Capetola 7th Boys have spurted to a 7-2 record helped by the inside play of Kevin Liddy. Garden City Boys Swimming Wins Division Title The Garden City Boys Varsity Swim Team won the division title in a meet held at the Nassau County Aquatic Center on February 3rd. Meet highlights include senior Roy Salsinha finishing in first place in division diving. Sean Lane put in an outstanding performance in the 200 yard freestyle and Chris Finnigan led the way for GC in the 100 butterfly. Colin Quinn who had a very impressive meet finished first in 100 yard backstroke. Sean Hosford had first place finishes in the 50 and 100 yard freestyle while breaking the high school record for 100 freestyle. Performances by Brendan Lee, Zack Dorkings, Tom Borsari, Timmy Logan, James Crafa and Tim McTiernan sealed the win for GC. The team will next compete at the County Championships.
