Evening Seminar Series For HS Juniors As part of ongoing outreach to local universities, the Garden City School District has arranged a series of Tuesday evening workshops for High School juniors presented by Hofstra University professors. "We're very excited about these seminars and believe they will strengthen our efforts to to improve student writing and to ensure a productive transition to college," Assistant Superintendent for Instruction Teresa Pendergast, Ed.D., said. Garden City High School faculty members will attend the workshops and will lead follow up discussions the day after each session. In addition, students will write brief reaction papers to the workshops they attend. Although these papers will not be graded, they will be read by the Hofstra presenters, who will pass their comments along to the students. "The range of subjects will be broad," Dr. Prendergast said. "Speakers will cover topics in mathematics, the sciences and social sciences, and the arts and humanities." Workshops will be held at the High School on Tuesdays from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. The topics planned are: Mathematical Magic (February 13); Outsourcing: Why Are We Dependent on It? Its Myths and Realities (March 6); New York as Ancient Rome (March 20); Is It Hot in Here? Atmospheric Gases and Global Climate Change (March 27); and The Protocols of Reading Science Fiction (April 10).
