Nancy Flatley, a second grade teacher at Stratford School, has received a $600 grant from Nassau TRACT (Teacher Resource and Computer Training), a consortium of 12 Nassau County school districts. Mrs. Flatley plans to use the grant to purchase hands-on learning tools for math centers that she has already established in her classroom. Concepts to be addressed include addition and subtraction, place value, simple geometry, time, money, and problem solving.
"I have come to understand that one of the most effective ways for students to achieve standards in mathematics is through the use of manipulatives," Mrs. Flatley said. Mrs. Flatley will purchase clocks, tangrams (ancient Chinese moving puzzles consisting of seven geometric shapes), and other items that are particularly well suited for accommodating the individual learning needs of her 21 students.
