Historical Society Calls On Student Artists

The Garden City Historical Society again thanks its 2006 Art Initiative winners, above, for their participation in "Landmarks of Garden City," our inaugural children's art contest. Pictured with last year's winners are Historical Society President Brian Pinnola, rear center, and Education Chairperson Mary Jane Caldwell, right.
The Garden City Historical Society announces its second annual Juried Art Contest, "The Doors of Garden City". We invite students in grades kindergarten through 12 who reside in Garden City to participate. All submissions must illustrate a residential or non-residential door(s) located in the Village of Garden City. Drawings must be created in pencil, color pencil, or pen and ink, and artwork must not exceed 18 by 24 inches, including mat. This year, for high school students only, we are adding a photography/computer graphics category. The deadline for all submissions is March 9, 2007.

There's quite an assortment of doors to choose from, among them those that provide the entry way to many of our community's elegant homes, our businesses and historic buildings, perhaps some side or garage doors, and even The Garden City Historical Society Museum doors.

The Art Contest has four categories: K-1, Grades 2 through 5, Middle School, and High School. The contest will be judged by local residents with art backgrounds. Awards will be presented to First Place, Second Place and Honorable Mention winners in each category.

The Historical Society will host a reception on March 25, 2007 at the Garden City Historical Society Museum, 109 Eleventh Street, at which time the artwork will be displayed and winners will be presented their awards. The artwork will continue to be on display for viewing by the public at the museum, weekends through April 29. (Museum will be closed Easter weekend, April 7 & 8.)

For further information and a permission form, or to arrange for submission of artwork, please contact Mary Jane Caldwell, education committee chairperson, at 516-248-5917, or Maureen Traxler, at 516-319-1906.
