Tea was served on Saturday, January 20th at 2:00pm, and the ladies of Lutheran Church of the Resurrection attended in a charming regalia of hats and gloves. And what hats! From sensational straw to voluptuous velvet as well as casual cowboy, the hats were bedecked in ribbon, netting, flowers, and feathers. Gloves ranged from dainty lace, crochet net-buttoned at the wrist-or worn elegantly in evening length. But the Winter Afternoon of Friendship and Fellowship Tea sponsored by Resurrection Women's Ministries had just as much substance as style.
Betty Hillyard opened with devotions and reminded the attendees that friends are one way that God takes care of us, recalling the great friendships of the bible-among them Naomi and Ruth. She then introduced the theme of the Tea with Forrest Gump-like sincerity, "In the cookies of life, friends are the chocolate chips," and presented a cookie/baking demonstration with a classic recipe for friendship that cleverly proved her analogy.

As with all proper afternoon teas the ladies were regaled with a medley of 18th century music performed by The Rose Garden Consort. The lovely string quartet played music by Boccherini, Bach and Pachelbel. After which, tea was served with delectable home-baked sweets and treats as the ladies sipped tea poured from a variety of whimsical and decorative china teapots.
The festivities continued as Diane Gatto, wearing a "My Fair Lady" inspired wisteria flowered hat, emceed a rollicking "Hat's on Parade" contest as each table voted for their best hat contestant. Out of ten winning finalists, Gloria Berkowitz won first prize for the traffic-stopping red straw hat she wore with a purple ensemble accented with white lace gloves. Beautiful "themed" gift baskets were given to all the winners.
Wearing a luxurious, wide-brim velvet hat, the afternoon was capped off with an eloquent appeal for donations to Resurrection's Kenya Mission, by Missions Chair Armia Bajit-Taylor. The mission helps provide housing, schools, clothes, food, medical facilities and supplies for orphaned children in that region.
