Alan William Smith

Alan W. Smith, a long-time resident of Garden City, died suddenly of a heart attack on Jan. 20 at age 90. He was born on July 18, 1916 in the Flatbush section of Brooklyn and was graduated from Lehigh University in 1938. At Lehigh, he majored in business, played varsity lacrosse and was a member of Sigma Nu fraternity. During World War II, Alan served as a captain of Ordinance, US Army, in Europe. On January 24, 1948, he married O. Frances Zizis and they moved first to Floral Park and then Garden City. Alan worked for more than 30 years as an agent for the Equitable Life Assurance Society in New York City, where he was a consultant in pension planning. Alan is survived by his wife of nearly 59 years, O. Frances Smith; his son, Bruce A. Smith of Yelm, Washington; and daughter, Barbara Smith Decker, of Sharon, Massachusetts and three grandchildren, Matthieu, Claire and Catherine Decker. The Mass of the Resurrection was held at St. Anne's Roman Catholic Church in Garden City on January 23.

Memorial remembrances may be made to the Ministries of Saint Anne's Church, 30 Dartmouth Street, Garden City.
