trip to the philadelphia flower show

The Recreation Department will sponsor a trip to the Philadelphia Flower Show through Prime Time Travel on Wednesday, March 7th. Prime Time Travel will pick our group up in the morning from Lord & Taylor's parking lot. We will travel to Philadelphia and spend the rest of the morning and afternoon visiting the various sights and displays at this amazing event. Lunch is "on your own." The cost of this trip is $66 and seating is limited.

To reserve a seat on this trip, please visit the Recreation Department in Village Hall. Payment must accompany reservations. Please make all checks payable to "Prime Time Travel." For further information, please call the Recreation Office at 465-4075.

Weekly Schedule for the senior center

Here is the schedule of events for the next two weeks at the Recreation Department's New Senior Center in the cottage at St. Paul's:

Monday, January 29 - Bingo - at 11 a.m. Come join the crowd for a fun filled morning.

Tuesday, January 30, - Board games - from 11 to 1 p.m. Challenge our staff to a game or set up your own, as we have many games to choose from.

Wednesday, January 31 - Brown Bag Social - at noon. Bring a brown bag lunch and join in on the conversations.

Thursday February 1 - Walking group at 11 a.m. Weather permitting, the group meets and then walks the grounds of St. Paul's, then retires to the Senior Center to eat brown bag lunches.

Create!!! - Come to the Senior Center at 1 p.m. and help create projects that are then donated to hospitalized children.

Monday, February 5 - Senior Makeovers at 1 p.m. Rebecca Kopcienski, Certified beauty consultant, will show you ways to make you look your best when you walk out the door.

Tuesday, February 6 - "Computer Kindergarten" - This introduction to computers will be held from 10 a.m. to noon. Although this class is free, pre-registration is necessary because space is limited to 24 people. call the Recreation Office at 465-4075 to register.

Wednesday, February 7 - Brown Bag Social and Lecture - Bring a brown bag lunch at noon and enjoy the company, and then stay for Professor Natalie Naylor's lecture titled "Journeys on Old Long Island" at 1 p.m. A description of the lecture is below.

Thursday, February 8 -

demonstration - "Makeup in minutes" - at the new senior center

Rebecca Kopcienski, Certified Beauty Consultant, will visit the New Senior Center at St. Paul's on Monday, February 5th at 1 p.m. to give a demonstration on "Makeup in Minutes" for our seniors. Whether you have been wearing makup for years or are just starting, this class is for you. Learn the tricks of the trade so you will look great no matter what your age. Rebecca will help you to always look your best when you walk out the door. This demonstration is open to any senior resident of the Inc. Village of Garden City.

computer kindergarten at the new senior center

The Recreation Department will sponsor a computer workshop for seniors called "Computer Kindergarten" on Tuesday, February 6th in the Senior Center at St. Paul's . This hands-on introduction to computers, run by Sharper Training solutions, will be held from 10 to 11:30 a.m. This demonstration is open to any senior resident of the Inc. Village of Garden City. interesting lecture at the new senior center

Natalie Naylor, professor emerita at Hofstra University, will visit our new Senior Center at St. Paul's on Wednesday, February 7th, to give an interesting lecture titled "Journeys on Old Long Island - Rambling in Long Island's Past: Writing of Travelers and Residents." The lecture will describe Long Island in the 18th and 19th centuries, based primarily on accounts of travelers through the region, including George Washington.

This demonstration is open to any senior resident of the Inc. Village of Garden City. The presentation will begin at 1 p.m. Feel free to come early with a brown bag lunch and socialize before the lecture.

adult art classes at Cluett hall

Due to popular demand, the Recreation Department will again offer an adult pastel class taught by Arleen Ruth Urban. This class is open to adult residents of the Inc. Village of Garden City. The class will run from 9 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. on Fridays beginning February 2nd. The classes will be held in Cluett Hall at St. Paul's. The cost of the ten week program will be $105.

This ten week program will teach the beginner as well as advanced student the art of painting portraits and landscapes/still-life in pastels from photographs. Students will be given the option of dividing each three hour session between portrait or landscape, or they may concentrate solely on the subject of their choice.

Demonstrations will be available as needed throughout the program. Each student will receive the individual attention required to work at their own pace and level of expertise.

Arleen Ruth Urban, the instructor for this program, is a signature member of the Pastel Society of America. A winner of numerous awards, her commissioned portraits hang in the many Garden City homes.

senior computer classes

The Garden City Recreation Department is offering a seven week computer class for adults on Thursday mornings beginning February 1st at the Senior Recreation Center on Golf Club Lane. This program is open to any adult who is a resident of the Inc. Village of Garden City.

This program, run by Sharper Training Solutions, Inc., starts with Computer Kindergarten for Grownups and each week continues through the "grades," teaching participants the basics of computers in a fun and easy way. These are user-friendly classes designed for the first time and novice computer users.

The seven week course will take place from 9:30-11:30 a.m. The cost to register for this program will be $60.

adult yoga classes offered

Our fall session of yoga will begin the week of January 22nd. Connie McKnight, our certified yoga instructor, has designed classes with all ages in mind. Each 15 week course will cost $75 and each class is 55 minutes long. All classes are held in Cluett Hall at St. Paul's. Any resident of the Inc. Village of Garden City is invited to join these relaxing classes. The description of our classes is listed below:

YogaDoesit1 (for relaxation and good health)

In this "gentle yoga" class, we'll explore and discover how simple yoga postures and breath work help to relieve stress, and tension, and improve flexibility and straighten muscles. Since yoga has been found to benefit everyone including seniors, those with back problems, headaches, sleeping problems and other medical challenges, all are welcome. So if you want to relax the mind/relax the body and learn more about yoga, please join us in this gentle yoga class. Bring a sticky mat, wear comfortable clothes and come to relax and even has some fun. Other props will be suggested at the first class. (this class was formerly Yoga over 50).

YogaDoesit2 (for relaxation and fitness)

In YogaDoes II, we'll explore and discover the many benefits of yoga. Yoga postures and breath work help to relieve stress and tension as well as straighten muscles and improve flexibility. This class will include more challenging postures (than Yogadoesit I). So, if you are looking for a good workout as well as a way to relax the mind/relax the body, please join us. Bring a sticky mat, and wear comfortable clothes. Other props will be suggested at the first class.

Mondays YogaDoesit 2 at 7:45 p.m.

Thursdays YogaDoesit 1 at11:30 a.m.

Adult dance classes at Cluett hall

Our second session of Adult Dance classes, taught by Felicia Lovaglio, will begin the week of January 22. This program is open to adults who are residents of the Inc. Village of Garden City. The following classes are offered:

Tuesdays beginning January 22 at 9:30 a.m. - Stretch and Tone

Wednesdays beginning January 23 at 9:45 a.m. - Ballet

Thursdays beginning January 25 at 9:30 a.m. - Stretch and Tone

Saturdays beginning January 27 at 11 a.m. - Jazz

The cost of each 15 week session is $120.00. To register for these programs, please visit the Garden City Recreation Dept. in Village Hall at 351 Stewart Avenue. For further information, please call the Recreation Office at 465-4075. Garden City Retired Mens Club

The Garden City Retired Men's Club is a non-profit membership organization formed in April 1961 for the purpose of providing educational and recreational activities for the retired male senior citizens of the Garden City Community. The organization is non-sectarian and non political.

All retired men 55 years or older residing in the Incorporated Village of Garden City, in the State of New York are eligible for membership upon paying a five (5) dollar initiation fee. If you are eligible and interested to join us, please come by. Every Monday is Open House. Or call Joe Leto 248-9022.

The Club House facility is located at No. 6 Golf Club Lane (directly behind Lord & Taylor parking lot). The building is open every day of the week, except Friday, and offers 2 regulation size pool tables, Television, Cards/Tables Board Games as well as outdoor Bocce, horseshoes and shuffleboard. Our Programs Committee is playing a very active speaker program. Come join us!!!

Coming Attractions:

Monday Jan. 29 th 1 p.m. - A member of the Gang Intelligence Unit of the Nassau County Sheriff's Office will speak on the influx of Street Gangs and their effect on our community. This is a must attend.

Wed. March 14 - 12:30 p.m. - St. Patricks Day Party, Stewart Manor Country Club, $35.00/person- open bar.
