A Word From The Publisher Congratulations to Abhinav Rohatgi, a senior at Garden City High School, who was named an Intel Science Talent Search semifinalist this week. For those who are unaware of the contest, this is perhaps the premiere scientific contest in the nation open to young people. (Years ago it was known as the Westinghouse competition.) Abhinav's work in this competition is not just a typical "science fair" project. Instead, the winners are actually contributing to the sum of scientific knowledge by working on new problems and applying the scientific method to real questions that they themselves develop. Successful projects require a huge commitment of time and energy by both the student and their supervising teacher, and they are both to be congratulated. In past years, some residents have been irked that other school districts on Long Island have had more success in the Intel competition than Garden City. While Garden City schools are among the best, it still was a little disappointing to see other districts' students listed among the winners, and not ours. Let us hope that this is a harbinger of the future. (By the way, budget time is almost upon us. Great research needs funding....)
