Garden City High School News

Lately I've been noticing changes being made to menus to accommodate the new "health craze" a lot of Americans are following in reaction to the obesity statistics in the US. When you go to a place like Panera Bread which used to offer as a side regular baguette, or chips, you now find two additional options, an apple or a whole wheat baguette.

Garden City schools followed suit a few years back with the addition of wraps, fruit, and salads to lunch choices. However, recently a new change has been made. The school store is no longer allowed to sell candy. The school store, now located inside the cafeteria, has always sold basic items kids like/need including pens, pencils, notebooks, folders, binders, and a selection of many types of candy. Students love to go and buy candy when they're in lunch. The candy that they sold was lollipops, Sour Straws, Nerds Rope, et cetera.

Considering the school store is only open during lunch periods what purpose does it now serve? Students I've spoken to go to the store mainly for candy because the store isn't open in the times of day, mainly the morning, when things like pens would be necessary.

This change also makes you wonder if the lunch staff should still be allowed to sell cookies, Rice Krispeis Treats, and Twix, if candy had to be eliminated from the school store because it's "unhealthy."

However one positive change has been made to the store, the addition of the very popular Vitamin Water. Now the people who run the school store have to come up with new additions to make sure people keep going there to purchase things.
