Adult dance classes at Cluett hall

Our second session of Adult Dance classes, taught by Felicia Lovaglio, will begin the week of January 22. This program is open to adults who are residents of the Inc. Village of Garden City. The following classes are offered:

Tuesdays beginning January 22 at 9:30 a.m. - Stretch and Tone

Wednesdays beginning January 23 at 9:45 a.m. - Ballet

Thursdays beginning January 25 at 9:30 a.m. - Stretch and Tone

Saturdays beginning January 27 at 11 a.m. - Jazz

garden city recreation's gym for grades k to 2

The Garden City Recreation Department is pleased to announce that this winter, Rich Anderson and the Recreation Staff will conduct a gym program for children in Kindergarten through grade 2. This program will consist of organized games and activities in a supervised setting. This program will run on Tuesdays from 3:30 to 5 p.m. in St. Paul's Field House beginning January 9th and ending February 13th. The program is free and no registration is necessary. Sneakers must be worn for any activity in the field house.

Note - Once the children are in our facility, they will not be allowed to leave unless accompanied by an adult. We also expect all children at this age to be walked into the field house by an adult.

adult yoga classes offered

Our fall session of yoga will begin the week of January 22nd. Connie McKnight, our certified yoga instructor, has designed classes with all ages in mind. Each 15 week course will cost $75 and each class is 55 minutes long. All classes are held in Cluett Hall at St. Paul's. Any resident of the Inc. Village of Garden City is invited to join these relaxing classes. The description of our classes is listed below:

YogaDoesit 1 (for relaxation and good health)

In this "gentle yoga" class, we'll explore and discover how simple yoga postures and breath work help to relieve stress, tension and improve flexibility and straighten muscles. Since yoga has been found to benefit everyone including seniors, those with back problems, headaches, sleeping problems and other medical challenges, all are welcome. So if you want to relax the mind/relax the body and learn more about yoga, please join us in this gentle yoga class. Bring a sticky mat, wear comfortable clothes and come to relax and even has some fun. Other props will be suggested at the first class. (this class was formerly Yoga over 50)

YogaDoesit 2 (for relaxation and fitness)

In YogaDoes II, we'll explore and discover the many benefits of yoga. Yoga postures and breath work help to relieve stress and tension as well as straighten muscles and improve flexibly. This class will include more challenging postures (than Yogadoesit I). So if you are looking for a good workout as well as a way to relax the mind/relax the body, please join us. Bring a sticky mat, wear comfortable clothes, other props will be suggested at the first class.

Attention All community park tennis platform players

All tennis and platform players using Community Park's facilities are requested to park in the North Parking Lot at Community Park. Construction is beginning on the mini golf area and the entire area south of the courts will be fenced off, with no access from the south to reach the courts. We thank you for your patience.

CHILDREN'S SWIMMING LESSONS AT ADELPHI

The Garden City Recreation Department will be conducting Children's swimming lessons for Village residents at the Adelphi University Swimming Pool in Woodruff Hall on Saturday mornings. Your child must be six years of age by the start of the program to participate. The classes will begin on Saturday, February 3, 2007 and run for nine weeks. Classes are taught by Red Cross Certified Instructors. The cost is $40. To register, please mail this form and a check to the Recreation Department at 351 Stewart Ave. Walk in registrations will not be accepted until January 30.

Level 1 - BEGINNER level - for children who have never taken lessons before.

Level 2 - teaches fundamental swim skills

Level 3 - perfects beginning strokes and skills

Level 4 - introduces intermediate strokes, diving skills, swimming for distance

Level 5 - designed to perfect stroke proficiency for experienced swimmers.

Level 6P - Personal Water Safety - for children who have passed "Red Cross" level 6 or 7 or were currently in level 7 - stresses survival floating, treading water, swimming in clothes, etc.

Level 6F - Water Fitness - for children who have passed "Red Cross" level 6 or 7 or were currently taking level 7 - sessions will cover learning training techniques, how to use fins, kickboards, pace, clock, etc.

The Recreation Department has received tickets on consignment for the following performances at the Nassau Coliseum -

Tickets can be purchased at the Recreation Office in Village Hall by any resident of the Inc. Village of Garden City. Tickets must be paid for in cash only. TENNIS CLASSES FOR THE OLDER CHILD

The Recreation Department offers a variety of tennis classes for students ages 12 and up. These classes are held at the Community Park Tennis Facility and will begin the week of January 3rd. The schedule of classes is as follows:

Senior Level is for children who are inexperienced in the game e of tennis. The 55 minute class will stress basic skills needed for the game. The 12 week session cost $240.

Tuesdays, Wednesday or Thursdays at 5:30 p.m.

Fridays at 4:30 p.m.

Saturdaysat 11:30 a.m.

Sundays at Noon

Senior Advanced Level Tennis is for ages 12 and up who are experienced tennis players and want to take their game to a higher level. This class runs one hour 25 minutes in length and costs $320 for 12 weeks.

Mondays, Tuesdays, or Wednesdays at 5:30 p.m.

The Senior Ultimate Workout is a drill program for the experienced tennis player which will be held on Fridays from 5:30 - 6:55 p.m. The cost of this 12 week program is $320.

OPEN GYM FOR MIDDLE SCHOOL AND HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS

On Wednesdays and Thursdays in the months of January and February, the field House will be open and supervised from 3:30 to 5:45 p.m. for students of Middle and High School age to use for basketball. In addition, volleyball will be offered on Thursdays for the same age groups. The games are strictly pickup, and no organized practices are allowed. This time is for middle and high school youngsters to enjoy games and socializing on their own. The Field House will be supervised by the Recreation Staff, so no parents will be allowed in the field house during this time.

preschool tennis at community park

The Tennis Facility at Community Park offers tennis lessons to children ages 4 and 5 who are residents of the Inc. Village of Garden City. These 55 minute lessons are offered on Tuesdays from 2:30-3:25 p.m. The twelve week session begins on Tuesday, January 9th and costs $150. Please note that any child registering for this program MUST be the appropriate age by the start of the session. To register, please visit the Recreation Office in Village Hall.

chess club meets at the library

Children interested in learning the game of chess or wanting to further their skills in the game are invited to join the Recreation Department's Youth Chess Club. This club meets every Saturday, beginning this Saturday, December 2nd, from noon to 2 p.m. in the Garden City Library. Any child in grades 3-7 who is a resident of the Inc. Village of Garden City can attend. This is a free program that will run until March.

preschool arts and crafts

Registration for our winter session of Preschool Arts and Crafts has begun. This six week program will begin the week of January 10th according to the following schedule:

Wednesdays 12:15 to 1 p.m.

Thursdays 12:15 to 1 p.m.

Any child ages 3 1/2 to five years who is a resident of the Inc. Village of Garden City is invited to join. The cost of this program is $30. Space is limited to 15 children in each class. To register, please visit the Recreation Office in Village Hall. Please note that the child registering must be 3 1/2 years old by the start of the session in order to register.

ELEMENTARY PROGRAM IN THE FIELD HOUSE

The Recreation Department is pleased to announce that once again this winter we will run an after school gym program in St. Paul's Field House for children in grades 3-5 who are residents of the Village of Garden City. The free program will begin the week of December 4th and will be held according to the following schedule:

Boys in grades 3-6Mondays from 3:30 - 6 p.m.

Girls in grades 3-5Fridays from 3:30 - 6 p.m.

Sneakers are required for this program. Our gym program will provide the children an opportunity to participate in hockey, basketball and other gym activities in a structured setting. Supervision will be provided by Rich Anderson and the recreation staff.

Please note: Parents are expected to be on time for pick up. Please come down to the field house to pick up your child.

interview dates for summer pool employment

The Recreation Department is announcing the start of interviews for summer jobs at the Garden City Pool. If you enjoy being outdoors and are willing to make a commitment to being a part of a team that works hard to provide quality facilities for our residents, we'd like to meet you!

If you are presently a high school junior or older and are looking for a great summer job, stop in the Recreation Office in Village Hall, pick up an application, and sign up for an interview.

Reminder: even if you were employed by the pool last year, you are still required to reapply and be interviewed for the upcoming pool season. Interviews will be conducted at Village Hall on the following dates:Wednesday, December 27

Adelphi's pool is closed from December 21 to January 3. Adult swim time will resume on Thursday, January 4th. For further information please call the Recreation Office at 465-4075.

Our instructors are up to date on the latest moves to keep you interested while exercising. Pat and Joy have years of experience and can show the individual how to modify the exercises to their levels.

To attend a single class, you only need to show on a given day and pay $4.00. If you would like to attend regularly, then we have 20 class passes that cost $60, a savings of $1.00 per class. youth paddle program to begin again

Garden City Recreation will start its second session of its Youth Platform Tennis Program on Friday, January 26 and will be held at the Platform courts at Garden City Community Park.

This five week program is open to any child in 6th to 12th grade who is a resident of the Inc. Village of Garden City. The cost of this five week program will be $100. The schedule is as follows:

Grades 9-12Fridays6 to 7:30 p.m.

Grades 6-8Fridays7:30 to 9 p.m.

women's wednesday night platform league

The new season of the Wednesday Night League begins on January 10, 2007 at 8 p.m. The league fee is $80 per person and includes court time, paddles, balls, lessons and awards. To sign up call Community Park at 483-2525.

women's beginner platform lessons

If you would like to learn the exciting game of platform tennis, please join us in our beginner learn and play program. A series of 5 lessons, held on Thursdays at 11:30 a.m. will begin on January 11, 2007. The fee is $75 and includes the court time, balls, paddles and instruction. mixed doubles tennis party

For a great night of fun, please join us at our mixed doubles night on Saturday, January 13, 2007 at 8 p.m.
