LET'S PLAY PICTIONARY
Charades on paper is the quick description for the game of Pictionary. The Young Adult Department invites all persons in grades 6-12 to come to the library for a lively round of Pictionary games. Prizes will be awarded to winning groups. The fun begins at 2:30 on Saturday, January 12th. Please register beginning January 2nd so that there will be ample games and refreshments.
YAK & SNACK
Joan Bauer, popular young adult author of humorous fiction has a hit with Thwonk, an ALA Best Book for Young Adults. This is the story of A. J., an aspiring photographer who has a personal cupid. What wish should she have granted? What would you wish for? Be careful.... Read the book and come to the Library on Wednesday evening, February 13 for discussion, just in time for Valentines Day. Refreshments will be served. Group meets at 7 PM. Pick up a copy of the book and register beginning January 9th.
TEEN 3 APPLES BOOK AWARD
In April the list of nominated titles for first Teen 3 Apples Book Award, a New York State Teen's Choice Award, were announced in this column. Beginning January 1, 2008, teens are invited to vote for their favorite from this list. The list follows:

BABYSITTING WORKSHOP
SCHEDULED FOR JANUARY
Any young adult in grades 6-12 is invited to participate in the popular Babysitting Workshop. As in the past, it will be given in two parts. Those who attend both parts will be given a certificate of completion. The first meeting to be taught by two neo natal registered nurses from Winthrop University Hospital will be held on Monday night January 14 at 6:30-8:30PM. The second meeting, taught by P.O. Rich Pedone of the Garden City Police Department Youth Bureau and Asst Superintendent of Recreation Ed Fronkowicz will be held on Tuesday evening, January 22 at 6:30- 8 PM. Registration will begin after the holidays on January 2, 2008 in the Young Adult Department. I

Free Exhibits
A group show entitled "Pastel Portraits & Landscapes" will be exhibited January 6 through Febuary 1st in the Garden City Public Library's Lower gallery. View work created in various styles designed by students who study award-winning instructor Arleen Rueth Urban. Participants will include artists from the Recreation Department of Garden City, the Garden City Community Club, as well as students from the instructor's private studio.
A display presented by St. Joseph's School will be exibited in the library's showcases January 2nd through the 30th. Samples of the student work, artwork, photos and school programs will be exhibited in honor of Catholic School Week.
Exhibits are free and open to the public during regular library hours. For hours call (516) 742-8405. The library is located at 60 Seventh St. Funding for gallery and showcase exhibits is provided by The Friends of the Garden City Public Library. Installation and removal dates are subject to change.

Holiday Closings
All Great Neck Library locations will close at 1 p.m. on Monday, December 31, New Year's Eve and will be closed on Tuesday, January 1, 2008, New Year's Day.
Weather Cancellation Notices Online
The Great Neck Library is a member of the free web service, www.cancellations.com . Library weather related closings/program cancellations are posted online at this site.
In order to access this service, Library District residents can log on to cancellations.com, type in their zip code or Great Neck Library and obtain information on program cancellations or Library closings.
In addition, at no charge, residents can request automatic e-mails from cancellations.com when the Library has posted any information. This is a great way for Library District residents who are connected online to be advised of weather related changes in Library hours or programs.
Extended Hours
at Parkville
The Library is pleased to announce that the Parkville Branch is now open from 10 a.m. until 9 p.m. on Wednesdays. The Branch now provides evening service on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays.
Board Seeks Nominating Committee Members
The Great Neck Library Board of Trustees is seeking individuals to be appointed to the Nominating Committee at the Annual Reorganization Meeting to be held on Tuesday, January 29, 2008. The Board will select two (2) Association members to serve.
