On November 17, the GU10 Garden City Flash finished a perfect season, beating the Franklin Square Lightning 5-1 at Sewanhaka High School. Although the Lightning proved to be big, fast and adept at clearing the ball, consistent pressure from forwards Katherine Galzerano, Nicole Leto, Julia McGuire and Katie Muldoon kept the ball in the Franklin Square end and eventually paid off. Mid-way through the half, a scramble in front of the goal delivered a loose ball to Kerry Defliese outside the Franklin Square area. Kerry settled the ball and calmly placed a low drive in the left hand corner of the net to put the Flash on top. Minutes later, Kerry duplicated the effort, intercepting a weak clearance in the center of the field and producing an almost identical shot to double the lead. Emily O'Neill closed the scoring in the half, pouncing on a 50-50 ball at midfield and racing through the center of the Franklin Square defense before slotting the ball into the far corner of the net to make it 3-0.

The second half saw continued pressure from the Flash but, despite numerous chances in the first part of the half, the team could not find another goal. With the girls focused on offense, some loose passing at the back allowed Franklin Square a break away that pulled a goal back. The Flash promptly restored the three goal margin, however, when Michaela Bruno took a pass from Nicole Derby, scampered down the left wing and coolly tucked the ball past the keeper at the far post. Late in the half, Emily O'Neill put a long throw into the Franklin Square box from the right side. The keeper came out, but could not control the ball and it dropped right to Michaela Bruno at left wing who tapped the ball over the goal line to provide the final 5-1 score line.

As in previous weeks, the Flash's defense was tough to penetrate. Franklin Square played a number of long balls over their heads, but Grace Cameron, Nicole Derby, Kerry Defliese and Isabel Klatt coped well and, aside from one lapse, did not allow the goal to threatened. Keepers Nicole Derby and Nicole Leto were largely untroubled.

The victory completes a very successful season for the girls. The team went 9-0 in league play (the only team out of 58 in the U10 division of the LIJSL to do so), outscoring their opposition 47-3 in the aggregate. Outside the league, the Flash won all ten games they played at the Covanta and Windsor tournaments, bringing their overall record to 19-0, with the girls outscoring their opponents by a margin of 81-6.

The Spring will likely see the Flash promoted to one of the upper divisions in the LIJSL. Based on the experience of prior Garden City teams, the competition will be fierce. The girls are, nevertheless, looking forward to the challenge. Go Flash!
