It's almost the middle of October already and instead of October's bright blue weather, we are having summer and the lazy, hazy days at that. Thoughts turn to going to the beach instead of going leaf peeping and on many calendars, Columbus Day has become - Discoverers' Day. What is this world coming to? After all, Columbus was the one who sailed the ocean blue in 1492 and what he found there was land and the fact that the world was not flat. He was the first to do that, and now he is lumped with those who sailed knowing they would not fall off the edge. History is not what it used to be, but most don't know it because they don't teach it the way we learned it back in the good old days.

Adelphi University held a big fund raising event under a big white tent this past week and there were many alumni present to get into the spirit. Among them were Alice Brown, Joan Kuster, Jane McGarr, Dorothy and Bob Beizelberger, Phoebe and Bob McMillan, and Anita and Joe Frey. All were delighted with the progress that has been made and the progress that is coming. Bridge is still big in town, and the Dinner/Bridge at the Garden City Country Club is growing. October 3rd saw Trudy Anderson, Irene and John Christie, Elizabeth and Charles Dunleavy. Michele and Jerry Weisberg, Athena and John Phillippides, Dorothy Alford and friends, Louise and Tom Butler, and Ada Kane and friends all enjoying both the dinner and the evening. However, and this is a first - no small or grand slam was reported that night. Bridge chairlady, Muriel Urban, announced that the next Dinner/Bridge will be held on Wednesday. November 7th so be sure to make your reservations.

Don't forget to get your reservations in for the Children's Medical Fund Lunch/Bridge on Monday, October 22nd. Patrice Giordano will take your check ($18 per person) at 312 Cambridge Avenue, Garden City or call 564-4954.

Fred Camp is chairing the American Legion Post's Octoberfest on October 21st at the Senior Center. You can call him at 248-8472 to see if they can fit you in.

Some folks just like to plan ahead and some things take a lot of time in the planning and doing. Ruby and Brad Gustavson (746-1061) and Andy Morreale (742-5857) are looking for folks to help stage the Garden City Community Theatre's spring production. They need people to help out with costumes, sets, stage crew, lights, sound, props, etc. so if you have ever wanted to help with any of these things - do give them a call. Its a lot of fun behind the scenes, too.

Eleanor Meyer chaired the A.A.U.W.G.C. Branch's table on Seventh Street at the Fall Festival and she had a good group of helpers as did Ann Daly for the Community Club of Garden City. It's good to see groups getting their message across and having fun doing it. Good for you ladies and all the helpers, too.

Happy birthday wishes go th Rose Forgione, who will celebrate her special day on the 17th of this month. May you have a great day and a year filled with health and happiness with many more to come.

Happy anniversary wishes go to Kay and Joe Hayes. who will celebrate on the 16th of October, and to Claire and Dick Burns, who will ring in their 50th anniversary on the 19th. May both happy couples enjoy their respective days and many more years of wedded bliss in health and happiness.

There was a Memorial Service for Bob Johnson on October 6th at the Garden City Community Church, attended by many of his friends from both the church and the Retired Men's Club where he could always be found playing bridge.

A wonderful and talented lady left town quietly last week - Elfin Snyder. Elfin had been active in the Garden City Little Theater and in the Garden City Readers Theater. As a young actress, she played on Broadway in such shows as "Winged Victory" and parts in plays put on by the Drama Department of the Community Club of Garden City and Hempstead. She also wrote a play that was produced with an all woman cast. She was quite a poet and had a wonderful sense of humor. Her husband Fred pre-deceased her by a number of years. Our prayers and thoughts go to her daughter Jo and to her son-in-law and her grandchildren. She will be missed by all.
