Garden City is known for many things: the beauty of our old houses, our lovely trees, our history, and now it seems that we are also known for the quality and variety of our fund raising events. At a fund raiser for an out of town organization, I met some people from Roslyn and was impressed by their knowledge of our events. They talked of the Election Day Fair (Community Church), Victorian Tea (Presbyterian Church), Tastings (G.C. Unit American Cancer Society), and the strength and variety in our many bridges. They also praised the ladies of this town because they knew that these events were organized and run by them. So ladies - TAKE A BOW - YOU DESERVE IT!

Our annual Fall Festival was a hugh success and the weather co-operated nicely. There was something for everyone - young and old. Among those both working at special tables or just enjoying the day were: Regina Dowling, Phyllis Dima, Ruth Labasco, Valerie Lemkul, Joe Leto, Barbara Wilson, Eleanor Meyer, and Gloria Tassone . It was good to see so many of our folks out and having fun.

The Flower Show at Hofstra University also drew a good crowd. It was sponsored by the Garden Clubs of Long Island and several of our ladies were there enjoying ( Carol Efthimiou and her daughter-in-law), working ( Muriel Urban ), or winning a Blue Ribbon ( Bernadette Pepin) or judging (Ellen Accardi).

Election Day is coming and Rose Ann Palmer is hosting the Public Policy meeting for the G.C. Branch of A.A.U.W.. Did you know that in England no campaign contributions are permitted and campaigning is limited to six weeks prior to the election? This group will discuss "Clean Elections" and here in the U.S. Maine and Arizona will now follow this system. Good for you gals and I wish we could all learn about it.

The Garden City Country Club held its September Ladies Lunch Bridge on September 13 th. Joy Losgar and Dorothy Alford brought in the first small slam of the day in 6 spades. No grand slam was made that day but the winner of the door prize was Barbara Bankosky . The next Ladies Lunch/Bridge will be held on October 18 th. Make sure you get your reservations made before that date.

Garden City friends were sad to learn of the passing recently of Donna Selover . She was an active member of the Mother's Association of St. Paul's School, when her son Rusty was a student there and she also was active in The Cathedral of The Incarnation, the Garden City Country Club (where she attended many bridges and dinner dances), the Lawrence Beach Club, and the Community Club of Garden City and Hempstead, where she was active in the Music Department. She was also a member of the G.C. Branch of A.A.U.W. where she was a member of their Opera Study Group. She will be missed by all her friends and our prayers go to her son Rus, her daughter-in-law Mary, and her grandaughter Victoria . See you next week!
