Sign-Language Interpreted Services At Cathedral
A Sign Language Interpreted Mass is offered at the Cathedral of the Incarnation every Sunday at the 9:30 a.m. Family Mass from September to June, and on a limited basis throughout July and August. In addition, special occasions such as Christmas Eve and Easter/Holy Week Services are also Sign Language Interpreted. The Mass is interpreted in American Sign Language.
The Episcopal Church has a rich tradition of services to the Deaf in America. Starting in 1817, services were initiated in Hartford, Connecticut and New York City by Thomas Hopkins Gallaudet, the son of the Reverend Thomas Galllaudet after whom Gallaudet University, a college for the deaf, was named and the Reverend Henry Cogswell, respectively. These services were conducted by ordained deaf clergy. This tradition continues today at St. Ann's Episcopal Church in New York City and in Episcopal Churches in many major cities throughout the country.
At the Cathedral of the Incarnation, Richard Stelle is the signer.
If there is a need for Sign-Interpreted Masses or services at other times, the Cathedral will attempt to meet the request. For further information about Sign Language Interpreted services, please contact the Cathedral Office at 516-741-7915.
