Adelphi President Speaks To Chamber
Dr. Robert A. Scott
"Universities as Economic and Ethical Forces in Society," will be the topic of a report by Dr. Robert A. Scott, president of Adelphi University, to Garden City Chamber of Commerce members and guests at its luncheon on Wednesday, October 16, 11:30 a.m. at The Garden City Hotel.
Dr. Scott was appointed by the Adelphi University Board of Trustees as the ninth president and professor of anthropology and sociology in July of 2000. Under his leadership, Adelphi has embarked on an historic construction projects that will add new centers for recreation, sports, and performing arts to the Garden City campus. He has built on Adelphi's rich traditions in undergraduate and graduate education, and continues to link the liberal arts and sciences with professional programs. Dr. Scott has been the driving force behind the success Adelphi University has achieved in the past seven years.
In keeping with his vision of Adelphi as the engaged university, Dr. Scott has helped the University deepen its ties with the Long Island community. On-campus cultural events, ranging from timely lectures by such popular speakers as Oliver Saks, James Carville and Mary Matalin, to art exhibitions and music, dance and theater performances, bring alumni and area residents onto campus. Dr. Scott has also involved Adelphi faculty, students and the broader community in addressing pressing community issued. He initiated Adelphi's Vital Signs social health assessment project and its Long Island Center for Nonprofit Leadership. Dr. Scott himself is a model of community involvement, serving on the boards of the Long Island Association, the Regional Plan Association, and Global Kids, Inc., among others.
The Chamber cordially invites both residents and members of the business community to hear of Adelphi's latest accomplishments and construction projects. The program will begin at 11:30 a.m. with a reception and showcase of various member businesses. Luncheon will be served promptly at 12:30.
