Knowing that it was go-ing to be a tight match against a talented RVC team, the Fireballs came out looking to control the match and break out on top with a fast first 10 min-utes. Forcing the play, the girls were able to get a call in the box for a penalty kick at about the 12 minute mark. Making a terrific run off a great through ball by Monique Roberge, Courtney Chmil drew both defenders to her and was taken down just inside the box to gain the kick. Christina Cesarini calmly stepped up to the mark and buried her shot into the upper corner of the goal. And the Fireballs had the early 1-0 lead and a head of steam. Keeping the ball wide with Courtney on the right and Meaghan Walsh and Erin Dean on the left, the Fireballs continued to try to mount the attack. Using Victoria Aldrich, Monique and Daniela Sampram as the target forwards, GC had several opportunities but could not get a clear shot off. As the Synergy started to work the ball up the field, the Fireball defense stood strong with Christine Malhame, Shannon McWilliams and Michelle Rotondo shutting down any inside runs; and Kim Verderber, Amanda Murolo and Jackie Wisniewski holding the outside attack under control. But late in the first half the Fireballs had a miscommunication on a clearing attempt and the Synergy were there to jump on it and take it to the goal, getting the tying goal past keeper Joanna Matuza. The half ended with two strong teams tied at 1.

But neither team could break through two tough defenses. That is until the Fireballs were able to get behind the Synergy defense with about 10 minutes left in the game as Meaghan sent the ball up the sideline. Getting to the ball first was Daniela, who was taken down as she tried to go to the goal. On the ensuing free kick from about 25 yards out, Christine sent a fantastic shot towards the far post. And before the Synergy defense could close on it Courtney came flying in for an amazing headshot which flicked the ball into the net for the go ahead goal. The next 10 minutes saw the Fireballs come under attack by a RVC team trying to get the tie. But GC wouldn't back down and finished off the game with some aggressive play in their defensive end. The best play coming as Amanda flew through the 6 yard box to clear a sure goal from the feet of two RVC forwards. The girls go on to play the South Merrick Sharpshooters this Sunday and look to continue their impressive play. Great job girls, keep up the good work!
