What's New At The Library

School's open, and whether you're trudging back to the classroom or taking advantage to the daytime quiet to update your skills, we have a virtual backpack of study aids to help you on your way.

Home Improvement Reference Center

Featuring the EBSCO interface, HIRC is a full-text database designed to assist homeowners in do-it-yourself repair, maintenance, and remodeling projects. Step-by-step instructions for thousands of decorating, electrical, outdoor, plumbing, and woodworking projects are provided in PDF (Adobe Reader) format, supplemented by articles from magazines and reference books that provide tips and suggestions.

Live Homework Help

Got homework? Get help! The Library has contracted with Tutor.com to bring you real, live tutors over the Internet. Live Homework Help will be available from 3:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. for 4th through 12th grade and beginning-college students. A student seeking help clicks the link on the Library website; enters the subject, grade level, and library-card number; and is connected to an expert in math, science, social studies, or English. Tutors undergo a third-party background check and receive certification through the Tutor.com Training Program. Live Homework Help requires the Adobe Flash Player browser plug-in (version 8 or higher), a free download.

Rosetta Stone

Traveling abroad for business or pleasure? New to the U.S.? There's no better way to connect with the locals than to speak their language. Using the "dynamic immersion" method, the Rosetta Stone system combines images, text, and voices of native speakers. The strategy aims to access the intuitive ability to connect words and meanings, simulating the natural way that a child learns to speak and read. Our initial subscription, which is geared toward travelers, features the fundamentals of nine languages: English (US), English (UK), French, German, Greek, Italian, Russian, Spanish (Latin America), and Spanish (Spain). Let us know if you need a different language or a longer course, so that we can take them into account when we renew our subscription.

All of the titles described above (and more!) are available in the Library and at home. To use them remotely, type www.gardencitypl.org in the "Address" line of your browser and press the Enter key. When the page loads, click on the link to "Databases." Enter the barcode number from your Garden City Public Library card when prompted.

Free Lecture: "Depression Era Glass"

A free lecture on "Depression Era Glass" will be presented by "Antique Week" columnist Rosemary Trietsch at 2 p.m. on Thursday, September 20, at the Garden City Public Library. This public program is funded by The Friends of the Garden Public Library.

Seating and parking is limited and on a first-come, first served basis. No tickets are required. The library is located at 60 Seventh Street, Garden City. For directions, call (516) 742-8405.

You are invited to bring one Depression-era glass item to this lecture for identification as time allows. Depression glass is machine produced and made in America from the mid 1920's through the 1930's. Learn about the history, methods, and companies of production, types of glass produced, and reproductions in the market today. Examples of glass from the Depression era will be used as a hands-on educational tool.

Rosemary Trietsch is a columnist for "Antique Week" newspaper, board member of the National Depression Glass Association, show chair for the Big Apple Depression Glass Club, proprietor of The Glass Cupboard (on the web), and co-owner of Just Glass (on the web).

Storytime Registration Alert

Alert Alert Alert!! In today's age of computer technology, it's hard to believe that anything can go wrong! Hit a button and voila, your information is on its way. Well in the real world, computers and computer systems have glitches. We had a doozy! Our computers are affiliated with Nassau County Library Association and their server was down on Saturday, which in turn affected Our system.

Registration for the Story Times began on Saturday, September 8 and we were unable to receive any of the on-line registration forms that were filled out and sent to us. We believe it's only a temporary situation, but ask that you come to the library or call to ensure that you indeed did register. We are working hard to ensure that everyone who registers will have their first choice. We hope to have this problem rectified and be up and functioning as soon as possible. We thank you for your patience and good humor during this time!

Please check the library website www.gardencitypl.org for upcoming events and registration dates. Funding for these programs has been provided by the Friends of the Garden City Public Library. Priority for registration and participation is given to children who are Garden City Public Library cardholders.
