Stephen K. Tompsett Student Award for Excellence in Math, Science or Technology
The Trustees of the Stephen K. Tompsett Memorial Fund for Technology in Education ("Stephen's Fund") are pleased to announce the winners of the sixth annual Stephen K. Tompsett Student Award for Excellence in Math, Science or Technology, which is presented to a graduating senior from Garden City High School and to a graduating senior from a private high school who is a resident of Garden City This year, the Trustees have honored Mr. Brian Wysocki of Regis High School. In addition, Mr. Conor Blanco of Chaminade High School received a plaque, letter of commendation and $500 as a Finalist for the Award. In the Garden City High School division, the voting resulted in a tie and the Trustees were pleased to present an Award to Ms. Kathleen Allen and Mr. Corey O'Brien from Garden City High School.
The Award includes a plaque, letter of commendation and check for $1500 to each winner. Our winners and finalist are exemplary young people with high academic and life achievements whom our Trustees felt exemplify Steve's wonderful qualities of love of learning, dedication to helping others especially through volunteerism and leadership.
The Trustees wish to thank all the wonderful applicants for this Award and wish them well in all their endeavors.
The Stephen K. Tompsett Award for Excellence in Leadership
This year, the Trustees were so touched and impressed by one particular applicant for the Math, Science and Technology Award that they decided to grant a very special award for Excellence in Leadership. This Award includes an engraved lucite plaque with the phrase "Family and Faith First" engraved on it. Steve always put family and faith first in every aspect of his short life and this is one of the qualities that made him the beloved leader that he was. The Trustees were pleased to present this Award to Mr. Robert Lawkins of Chaminade High School. This Award includes a letter of commendation and a check for $1000.
Stephen K. Tompsett Citizenship and Character Award and Stephen K. Tompsett Award for Excellence in Technology
The Trustees of Stephen's Fund are pleased to announce the winners of the annual Stephen K. Tompsett Citizenship and Character Award which is presented to a graduating 8th grader from St. Joseph's School. This year the voting resulted in a tie. Our 2007 winners are Allison and Brooke Rozea whom the Trustees felt best exemplified Stephen's wonderful qualities of kindness, spirituality and service to others. The Award includes a "Citizenship" medal on green ribbon, engraved with the winner's name as well as a check for $150.
In addition, this year the Trustees voted to present a special award to Conor Proce for Excellence in Technology. Conor has spent a great deal of time helping St. Joseph's School with technology upgrades and maintenance including for the musical play production, and in the computer room, library and other areas. This is the first time this Award has been granted and includes a medal and $150.00.
About the Stephen K. Tompsett Memorial Fund for Technology in Education
Stephen's Fund was set up in September 2001 to honor the memory of Steve Tompsett, Garden City resident and a very active volunteer at St. Joseph's Church and St. Joseph's School. Stephen was a Senior Vice President of Technology of Instinet Corporation when he was killed on Sept 11, 2001 while attending a technology conference at Windows on the World in the World Trade Center.
