Garage Sales! How the ladies love them - and even the men. They are extra special in the spring and the fall when everyone cleans out their closets and finds those items that we fell in love with six months ago and could not live without. We also find that we have not used them since we bought them and out they go. Many garage sales do specialize in certain items (electronics, jewelry, books, etc.) but recently one lady specialized in hats and some of them were never worn. Arlene Grecco had some of the nicest around at her sale. I could be called a good judge of hats but I did resist the temptation. There is usually something for everyone and the price is always right or at least it is negotiable. Try them, you'll like them and they could become a new hobby.
The Ladies/Lunch/Bridge at the Garden City Casino was held this past week and the awards were given out. Most of the ladies were planning to get together at the pool for a game between their swims. I hear rumors that Florence Coffin will be holding court at her favorite table at the pool and that is a good sign. The Casino ladies delivered a plant and card with all their best wishes for her recovery and maybe that did the trick. Those get-well wishes raise the spirits and tell you that you are not forgotten. See you at the pool, florence.
Pat Dalton may also be among us in the very near future and she will also be a sight for sore eyes. We can't wait Pat!
Both Florence and Pat have been missing from the Casino Bridge for some time, but among those enjoying the final afternoon of the season were: Louise Butler (a prize winner) Dorothy Hedwig, Jean Tomitz, Judy Radocy, Joan Schieck, Claire Burns, Valerie Hegemann, and Pat Weber.
Dorothy Alford and hubby Ed are back home from Florida and were seen attending their grandson's opera debut at the Stewart School. Can the Met be far behind? They also attended a 50 th wedding anniversary party at the Casino here in town and Dorothy had a table at the Garden City Country Club's Dinner/Bridge. Now that is hitting the ground running!
At the G.C. Country Club's Dinner/Bridge, the first small slam of the evening was dealt, bid, and made by Marion and George Cordes and Jane Krull. Dorothy Schlageto brought in a grand slam in 7 No Trump. Bridge chairlady, Muriel Urban, announced that the next Dinner/Bridge would be held on Wednesday, July 11 th and be sure to make your reservations.
Gerry McHugh put down her pencil as the Recording Secretary of the Community Club of Garden City only to pick it up again for the same position with another organization that she is a member of - G.C. Branch of A.A.U.W. Now, that's what I call dedication to duty. It's also that spirit that makes volunteerism so strong in this town.
Belmont Day was a rousing success as usual. Even if the skies were overcast, the spirit was not. The bands were playing and folks were dancing in the streets and the restaurants made out very well. Enjoying the evening were Sarah and Felix Iannacone, Irene and John Christie, Marilyn Kerr (without her hat - why, I am surprised at you), Everett Vilanda, Pat and Andy Delvecchio, Vivian and Angelo Romano, Joe Leto, Alice and Ced Melkonian, and Valerie Lemkul. A good time was had by all.
Happy birthday wishes go to Herb Polak, who will be celebrating his special day on the 20 th of this month. May he have many more of them in health and happiness.
Happy wedding anniversary wishes go to Irene and John Christie, who will celebrate 57 years of wedded bliss on the 17 th of June (as well as Father's Day), and to Ellen and Brian Ridgway, who call June 20 th their special day. May both couples have a great day and many more years of wedded bliss with much happiness and good health.
And now - a Very Happy Father's Day to all the Dads in this town and we hope you too have a great day. See you all next week.
