Unlucky Sparks Dominate Two Games But Drop Points

2007-05-11 / Sports

The Garden City Sparks (GU11) dominated RVC last Saturday but were unable to score a goal. In the first half, Haley O'Hanlon hit the crossbar from about 20 yards and Anne Blanco hit the post. At halftime, the score was 0-0 despite the Sparks maintaining more than 60% possession. Into the second half the Sparks were controlling the play and beating RVC to just about every ball. Erin Connerly hit the post and the RVC keeper denied Shannon Callahan and Tara DeAngelo with two spectacular saves. Unfortunately, late in the game RVC capitalized on their two shots and won 2-0.

The previous week in Glen Cove the Sparks played the entire first 20 minutes in Glen Cove's half. Emma Gallagher hit the post, and Taylor Carpentier's shot deflected off of a Glen Cove player just wide. Finally, Katherine Malhame was able to tap in a Caroline Beaty cross for a 1-0 lead. More bad luck for the Sparks late in the first half saw Glen Cove unbelievably tie the game after the ball was kicked out of Kaitlyn Gorman's hand. The referee insisted that the ball was dropped. Like a disturbed beehive, the girls swarmed all over Glen Cove in the second half. Sarah Galzerano's goal gave the Sparks the lead before Kate DeMarco's half volley ripped the back of the net (potential goal of the year) for the 3-1 victory.

Despite only winning one game in four this season, the girls have played hard each week. Certain games the Sparks have dominated and dropped points, while other games have been dead even but a counter attack by the opposition has resulted in a Garden City loss. Nevertheless, the girls continue to work hard at practice and along with their inspirational leader Briana Maglio look to start a winning streak this Saturday against POB.
