The boys U-10 Warriors enjoyed back-to-back wins on April 28th and May 5th, to extend their winning record to 3-and-1. April 28th saw a 3-1 victory over the Merrick Rebels, while May 5th brought a fun 4-0 shut-out versus the Massapequa Red Thunder. In both games the Warriors Defense and goal keeping were outstanding, allowing only 1 goal total scored, while the hotter-than-hot Offense booted in 7 goals.

The April 28th Merrick game began with Kyle Brattan and John Simmons pounding at the goal, with Brogan Mahon, Owen Fisher, and Timmy Foxen following suit. The 1st Warrior goal was a trio attack as Mahon passed to Foxen who chipped to Fisher; Owen Fisher scored. Textbook teamwork! In the backfield, James Walsh, Matt Flynn, Matt Greiner, Jonathan Granville, and Chris Larkin kept the ball in Warrior possession most of the time, and Gerard Smith made great saves when needed. Merrick was able to get one in, however, and the score was tied 1-1 at the half.

James Walsh, playing outstanding defense, beats his opponent to the ball.
James Walsh, playing outstanding defense, beats his opponent to the ball. The 2nd half began with a bang as John Simmons had back to back shots on goal that were oh-so-close. Gerard Smith knocked on the door a few times as well, keeping the pressure on the Merrick defense. Owen Fisher got around 2 defenders and broke away, tearing down the field and drilling the ball into the goal for his - and the Warriors - 2nd goal. James Walsh had a well-directed corner kick that Timmy Foxen trapped and shot, but the Merrick goalie saved it.

Matt Flynn was absolutely on fire on Defense as he continued, with aid from defenders Matt Greiner and Jon Granville, to bring the ball downfield every time. Flynn made a perfect pass to Kyle Brattan, who booted it in to give the Warriors a 3-1 lead. Chris Larkin in goal luckily saw little action. (No complaints, though, about "boring" goal-tending duty!)

The May 5th Massapequa game was lots of fun from the starting whistle, and ended up in a 4-0 Warrior shut-out. With lots of passing to the open players, GC scored 4 goals by 4 different Warriors, with assists from 4 different players. The Defense was un-penetrable as the "D" boys provided countless opportunities for the aggressive Offense to do their job. The Warriors truly demonstrated the meaning of "team."

First half Warrior goal keeper Gerard Smith saw some tough action by Massapequa's attack but beautifully saved several shots on goal to prevent a Massapequa score.

Goal 1: John Simmons passed to Jon Granville, who passed backward to an open Brogan Mahan. Brogan gave it a big boot, over the head of the last defender, as Owen Fisher ran up and knocked it in. 1-0.

Goal 2: Timmy Foxen and John Simmons volleyed the ball downfield with some tricky footwork; John chipped to Timmy who lobbed a perfectly-placed shot over the goalie's head. 2-0 at halftime. For the second half, it was John Simmons' turn in goal, and he was downright lonely, as Massapequa got the ball downfield only 2 or 3 times. (But, again, who can complain about boring goalie duty?)

John Simmons and Timmy Foxen celebrate after Timmy chipped in for a goal, assisted by John. Goal 3: Chris Larkin and Kyle Brattan took it down; Kyle passed to Brogan Mahon. Brogan fired a hard bullet at the goal, which the goalie saved . . . or did he? The ball was bobbled, so Brogan came right back at him and put it in the goal. 3-0.

Goal 4: This was the most exciting goal of the game! As the ball was literally inches from going out of bounds at the Massapequa corner of the field, Gerard Smith caught up to it, turned it around and fired a head-high shot towards the waiting Warrior offense. Jonathan Granville jumped up and headed the ball - right into the goal! Great header, Jon! 4-0.

The talented Warrior defense of Matt Flynn, James Walsh, and Matt Greiner continued to play outstanding soccer, as they got on the ball, and stayed on it until they dribbled or booted it upfield.
